Here is our Top Secret Societies list which many are widely known amongst the gossipers, and a few remained in the shadows. Some of these secret societies were disbanded, while many are still fully functioning to this day. Millions of members belong to some, and the numbers keep growing worldwide. Top Mysterious Secret Societies

  1. Blackwater

    • Blackwater is a private/corporate army that is the exception to the society factor on this list. Blackwater is funded publicly but accountable for their actions. They are mercenaries for hire to the highest bidder. Secret services and smaller country governments have outsourced their aid in the past and continue to do so.

  2. The Order of the Skull and Bones

    • The Order of the Skull and Bones was originally called the Brotherhood of Death and is America’s oldest secret student society. Many politicians, past presidents (Bush family), and many other powerful figures have emerged from this group. There is a link that you must have attended Yale University, and your family must have achieved great wealth within the past 100 years, and if that was not enough, you must be born to a family with American ancestry from the east coast with roots far back to the 1600’s.

  3. The Freemasons

    • The Freemasons were founded in 1717 in England. Freemasons are not allowed to invite new members nor share any of the societies secrets to anyone. Some believe that the original masons were the masons who built the Temple of King Solomon. Others also believe the Freemasons were derived from the ashes of The Knights Templar. To become a member, you must ask a Freemason. The Freemasons total about five million members worldwide.

    • Members included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Benedict Arnold, and Paul Revere. Also Franklin D. Roosevelt (U.S. President), Theodore Roosevelt (U.S. President), William J. Clinton (U.S. President), Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin (Astronaut), R.B. Bennett (Prime Minister of Canada), Francis Bischof, Queensland (Australia Police Commissioner), and John M. Harlan (U.S. Supreme Court Justice).

  4. Rosicrucians Order

    • The Rosicrucians Order is a mystic Christian fellowship founded in the 1400s with a soul purpose of creating healthcare for all. Initially started with eight members.

  5. Ordo Templis Orientis

    • Ordo Templis Orientis (The Order of the Temples of the East) was founded as an offshoot of The Freemasons where the group followed The Beast, an occult magician named Aleistor Crowley.

  6. Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

    • The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is another secret society stemming from The Freemasons. Ordo Templis Orientis leader Aleistor Crowley started as a member here before further branching off into his own sect. 

  7. Knights Templar

    • The Knights Templar (The Templar Knights) was a childhood favorite of mine which were also kind of loosely the army of the Catholic Church. They were granted a headquarters beside the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. The Knights Templar is documented with creating the world’s first bank system. The Knights Templar were disbanded as traitors when King Philip the Fair, cousin to the then Pope, borrowed a large sum of money and did not want to pay the loan back. The King persuaded his cousin The Pope to mark the Knights Templar as traitors and devil worshippers leading to their disbandment and the overnight massacre of a great many of its members. This massacre happened on Friday the 13th. Supposedly, some lucky members managed to flee with the Holy Grail and the Mark of the Covenant.

  8. The Illuminati

    • The Illuminati was founded on May 1, 1776, in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt. The word Illuminati is the plural form of the singular word meaning "Enlightened." The founding members numbered only five. The Illuminati took many policies and practices from The Freemasons secret society. Many structures around the world hold secret meanings hidden within/around them with written cryptic symbols.

    • Members included Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Monroe, and James Madison.

  9. Opus Dei

    • Opus Dei is a group hidden within the Catholic Church. They believe that anyone can find sanctity. Some also believe that the society was created as a radical group to keep the current teachings of Christianity as the only truth.

  10. The Black Hand

    • The Black Hand, formed in 1911, was a secret society military group/conspiracy group created to assassinate the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and liberate the Serbia people. This event spurned World War I.
