Setting the Stage
H.P. Lovecraft set the stage for many of the horror movies that were filmed later. Early Horror Works will keep you on the edge of your seat with tension as you anticipate what is going to happen next. If you enjoy terror, if you enjoy a trip through the unthinkable, if you ever had the slightest thought that you might enjoy mind twisting writing, this book is for you!

Imagination Required!
OK these aren't gruesome, bloody, horror stories - these are "Old School" stories of terror - where the victim's own mind is his worst enemy.
Five tales from H.P. Lovecraft, regarded widely as one of America's greatest writers in the Horror Genre.
Classic tales of the man who confronts a "beast" in a cave - but is it even real or is it his mind building on the local folk lore - "The Beast In The Cave"? Stories like this and my personal favorite "The Music of Erich Zann" which focuses on a student of metaphysics.
Eric Sellin's reading is clear and engaging - but he could benefit from a lesson from the greats maybe listen to a little Vincent Price or even Christopher Lee! LOL!

Early Works in the Horror Genre
Lovecraft's short stories presented here seem a bit tame given the explosion of horror over the last 30 years, however some interesting ideas are pursued. A good workout for the vocabulary, it definitely helped to fill time on a long vacation drive.

IT'S A BOOK, NOT TELEVISION
Other reviewers maybe unfamiliar with audio cd books, but I have listened to hundreds, and this book is certainly well comparable to others. It is well read, nicely inflected and easily understood. The early material presented here is interesting and effective. It must always be remembered when reading material of this sort that these were the first stories of their kind, and as such the reader maybe able to predict somewhat of what is coming, because you've read the subsequent stories that have built on these. Nevertheless it is worth a listen.

Poor narration, weak stories
The stories are not very good, being written before Lovecraft developed his unique style.
But the real problem here is the narrator. He has no feel for the material and significantly detracts and distracts from the stories. They should get an actor to read this material, not an ex-radio DJ. That might give it some redeeming quality.
