Review of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths
Mighty Zeus, with his fistful of thunderbolts, Athena, goddess of wisdom, Helios the sun, greedy King Midas--here are gods, goddesses, and legendary figures of ancient Greece brought to life in the myths that have inspired great literature and art throughout the ages. Illustrations throughout.

The best introduction to the greek myths for children
This book has completely captivated my five year old Boy. He asks to read it every night. This book is very accurate and does not mingle stories together or try to modernize the stories like the mutilations that most kids are exposed to by Disney or the likes. If true subject matter is too disturbing as in the rape of medusa the authors simply offer all of the other important information without compromising the story. I could not recommend a better book to give children a backbone in mythology.

A Classic Book in Every Way
D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths has been in constant print since 1962. There are very few children's book that can make this claim. The reason this book has been going strong for nearly fifty years is that it works on so many different levels. Visually, Edgar D'aulaire's energetic mid-century modern illustrations appeal both to children and adults. Edgar D'aulaire was a student of Henri Matisse and his work shares the same colorful vitality. As for the content, it can be enjoyed by both the youngest listeners and their reading parents. Greek Mythology is deeply embedded in our Western culture. On more than one occasion, I had one of those ah haa moments. So that's why we call it the Red Sea or I didn't know the Port of Calais was named after the son of the North Wind. The Greek Myths are all around us and "D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths" is a wonderful introduction. My only advice is purchase the hardback edition. Your kids will be going back to it for many years. Highly recommended.
