Review of Daemon
Black Ops specialist Jeff Lehane burned out fast and retired young. He still has nightmares about a bloody mission into Iraq, right on the eve of the war. Yet Lehane reluctantly agrees to assist his ex-wife, who is guarding a Latino rap star. She is killed during the concert, and Jeff soon discovers that someone-or something-has broken into the morgue to eat from her corpse. Outraged, Lehane assembles his former team and they begin to hunt down the ghoul that is stalking Las Vegas.

Great Reading
First of all, I love Harry Shannons books. This book was very interesting to read. It is really gory and makes you think a little. I read it in 2 in less than 2 weeks.

Full spectrum entertainment- G L Hall 'Choate Road'
Rare is the author who can combine genres and make it work as well as what I read in Daemon. The story of a retired Special Ops expert who sees someone he loves fall in the line of duty is enough to launch any fun ride. But when you add in that the recently deceased corpse (and others) are being eaten by SOMETHING, it creates a book you can't put down.
I went from chapter into chapter glued as new twists and horrors came forth. Shannon spends time developing strong realistic characters which often doesn't happen with a story backdrop like this. I've never been a Special Ops military trained bodyguard hitman but Shannon put me in that world and I understood it.
He is also a clever writer when it comes to subtle enhancements. I loved how when he wrote from the perspective of the 'monster', it was in present time, making you feel like you were right there thinking and stalking like the creature. And I probably missed another dozen things he did to pull me in. This is a writer who doesn't just let the words fly as he dives into his story. This man truly knows his craft.
Daemon has something for every fan of action, horror or just plain fast reading adventure. It can be intellectual, it can be guns blazing, and it can be downright gory and terrifying. Clancy that gives you nightmares to rob you of sleep. A reader won't be disappointed with this book!

Wild and fun read...perfect for the upcoming season!
I'm a big horror/sci-fi/mystery&crime fan, so you can imagine my gleeful surprise when I read the blurb for this novel! It contains elements from all of my favorite genres without any of these elements overpowering or tripping over each other. The story is virtually seamless and takes the reader on a haunting action/horror ride that will leave you breathless at the end. The characters are an interesting, eclectic bunch (although some action in the beginning brought to mind the cliche of how it's usually the black person that's the first to die in a horror movie) that has you rooting for your favorites (mine awas Pops). I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and finished it in two days. This was my first Harry Shannon novel but it certainly won't be my last. Highly recommended.

Fast paced horror
"Daemon" is a fast-paced, B movie of a horror novel in the classic pulp tradition--gory, violent, profane yet often darkly funny at the same time. The plot uses police forensics, Special Ops tactics and a number of other elements to drive the story, make it feel fresh and keep the tempo brisk throughout. "Daemon" even dares to touch on Taoist philosophy, via the protagonist, to make the point that evil exists within good and visa-versa--that everything is a whole, and thus our sworn enemy (here a creature born in Iraq) is also us.

Not for the squeamish!
Take a 50's monster movie, move it into the present day and add a bunch of gizmos and guns and you've got the basics for Daemon.
Jeff Lehane is a retired black ops specialist perfectly content to live the rest of his life away from most people. When he is asked to help guard a rap star he initially refuses but is lured back in once he learns his ex-wife is running the show. After she is killed during an assassination attempt he makes it his business to find her killer, especially once he learns something has broken into the morgue to chew up her body. The story then follows Lehane and his team as they learn that this isn't a typical hit but something far more otherworldly and evil.
I've read quite a few Harry Shannon stories and one thing he does really well is the flawed hero. Harry manages to make guys with honor, brains, and ass kicking ability without writing the same character over and over or so goody-goody Gary Stuish you want something large and pointy to fall on them.
This book is chock-full of blood, fluids, bone, and anything else a body can possibly produce and lose spectacularly. If you think that's something that might bother you then keep walking. If you have no problems with that and like a chilling horror/mystery with a special forces bent then I think you'll really enjoy this book.
My only real complaint was a desire for the story to be fleshed out more (no pun intended.) Sometimes it felt like there was history I wasn't privy to. Also the ending was abrupt but then that fits in with the 50's monster movie style.
