Review of Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories (James Bond 007)
Many of Ian Fleming’s short stories have been the inspiration for the extremely successful James Bond film franchise, and included in this collection are such stories as Octopussy, The Living Daylights, and For Your Eyes Only. The title story, Quantum of Solace, lends its name to the upcoming James Bond film, slated to release in Fall 2008. This collection will be published to coincide with the film’s release, as well as to continue Penguin’s centenary celebrations of Fleming’s birth.

Excellent Collection
This a fabulous collection of James Bond short stories. The book has the action, adventure and cunning of all the full-lenght James Bond novels, but the finest feature of these short stories is their unique and enlightening glimpse of Bond himself. Perhaps the best short story is the namesake of thye collection: Quantum of Solace keeps readers interested with no action whatsoever.

Is Bond like this in the movies?
I've never seen any of the Bond movies or read any of the Bond books. Still, like most people, I've always been bombarded with the impression of Bond as a tough, suave guy who is always involved in action-packed situations. But in half of these stories he doesn't even hold a gun. He either attends a jewelry auction, or searches for endangered fish, or just listens to other people talk about their marriages. He sympathizes with Castro, protects aquatic life, and refuses to kill the pretty girl he was told to assassinate. So he's definitely more of a bleeding heart than our cultural stereotype of him would suggest.
Yes, I admit, I was disappointed to see Bond as a much "weaker" individual than I previously imagined. But the stories in this collection do a good job of depicting the inner struggles of Bond's humanity, and humanity in general, which I'm sure the films bother to touch on. The Quantum of Solace story in particular is quite deep. The writing is so well done that it's enough to make you forget that Bond is extremely far removed from the main character in two of the stories and only plays a bit part. A word of warning - readers who don't have much interest in the inner workings of covert operations will find sections that drag.
There are several overly-gruesome death scenes in the stories (very few caused by Bond) that should entertain fans looking for action. I personally could have done without them. I guess spy novels just aren't for me.

very very good short stories
Ian Fleming wrote in a style that other authors can not seem to match. His James Bond books are very unique. These are escape stories but at least they are plausible. The service was quick and the book was in good condition.

Review of Quantum of Solace
Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories is the new collection of James Bond short stories, written by Ian Fleming, and Quantum of Solace is the name of one of the short stories contained therein. This collection is the first time all nine of Ian Fleming's James Bond short stories have appeared in one volume together. Also, their publication coincides with the upcoming new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig.
Interestingly, the film Quantum of Solace is not based on the short story of the same name. Nevertheless, these short stories offer glimpses into James Bond and the sorts of adventures he undertakes not available from the longer novels. In fact, one of the most compelling stories in the collection, Quantum of Solace, is just a conversation between James Bond and the Governor of the Bahamas---this story alone is worth the purchase price of the collection.
The entire list of short stories is:
"From a View to a Kill"
"For Your Eyes Only"
"Quantum of Solace"
"Risico"
"The Hildebrand Rarity"
"Octopussy"
"The Property of a Lady"
"The Living Daylights"
"007 in New York"
Cheers.
