A joyful read!
I saw Marsha Marks being interviewed on Life Today, James and Betty Robison's tv show a few weeks ago, and I so enjoyed her interview I immediately ordered her three books, and plan to get the next one when it comes out in May. I love "10l Amazing Things About God"...I got it in the mail yesterday and read it last night. Refreshing, witty and wonderful and such a relief to know how God really feels about us. I have already loaned the book to a co-worker who I think will enjoy it too and plan to get a few more for birthday gifts. Thanks Marsha, and keep writing!

A ready source of encouragement...
In the study of the spiritual disciplines, it is critical that we know who we are being disciplined for. We must know the nature and character of the person we are devoting ourselves to. What is it about this person that should warrant such a drastic personal response from us? As Boa states, "The most basic of all these truths is the character of God, and in this holy ground the Christian life is rooted." 101 Amazing Things About God addresses the character of God in a very real and practical way.
The author tells us that this book is dedicated to her atheist friend. It is partially intended then to be somewhat evangelistic in that even the lost can see God's love in His actions. It is also intended to show how different people can and will see God from different perspectives.
The main theme of the book is how the author has personally experienced or personally observed the various aspects of God at work in the lives of people. She has a keen eye for observing and then seeing God at work in different situations.
I can sometimes assess the value of a book to me personally by going back to see the things that I had highlighted or marked in some way. A couple of nuggets of wisdom that I gleaned were;
1) "God finds it easier to pour Himself into those who are emptied of self rather than those being full of themselves".
2) "He did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world and He didn't send me into the world to condemn the world either".
The book accomplishes its goal of shedding some light on the nature of God and His work by use of simple, easy to understand language, and insightful personal observation.
It is always encouraging to see how fellow Christians can give personal testimony of God's work in their lives. It helps to strengthen the rest of us, especially when we are going through something that someone else has endured before us.
Warren Wiersbee notes, "This book...is practical theology in digestible doses". I would agree with his observation.
This is a wonderful short read. It is simple and straightforward and at times can pull on the heartstrings of the reader. This book can be used as a quick devotional reference or simply as a ready source of encouragement.

#102 = Marks Mixes Mirth With Serious Theology
There is an error in Marsha Marks' math. She counts 101 amazing things about God. I counted 102. That 102nd thing is her ability to mix mirth and serious theology that points the reader closer to God.
"101 Amazing Things About God" sets forth a verse, an idea and some comment. Sometimes that comment is a short essay or anecdote. Each is numbered.
It is a gentle book on the surface, with small, but challenging messages.
#63 tells us that God is maker of great maps. That's the title. Then the comment is, in this case, a poem about God showing her the way. The verse is Psalm 119:32, "I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free."
The anecdotes are sometimes very personal, about her fears or inadequacies. Each can be read in a few minutes, with the longest taking about fifteen minutes.
Who should read this? It isn't heavy philosophical theology; it's accessible. I'd feel comfortable giving copies as gifts for Christmas to teens on up. Mine will end up as bathroom reading material, to encourage any visitors.
It is like a light version of "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers This does not mean shallow. It is just that Marks very practically applies Christian Scripture to everyday life. There is nothing shallow about that.
I fully recommend "101 Amazing Things About God," by Marsha Marks.

Mallowcups For Marsha
I finally got this book to see what the fuss was all about. You know the part in Shawshank Redemption, where Tim Robbins comes out and stands in the rain? That's what this book was to me. Pure saturating relief. This is it, this is what we're looking for when we're looking for God. We want things we recognize. We want to be able to say, I knew He was like that all along, I just knew. Marsha Marks has selected 101 times He has intersected her days and has put them in a prose so delightful and enjoyable I wish it was 1001 things.
Kids came running to see what I was laughing about when I read some parts. I'm glad that's what Marsha did with this little volume, she made God to be an everyday deal, with all the joy and hilarity and yeah, heartache it means. Thanks, Marsha. I'd share a pack of Mallowcups with you.

Like a chocolate raisin
This was the best gift I gave at Christmas. Everybody loved it. It was touching, insightful and hysterical. I use it as a regular reference whenever I need some extra encouragement, laughter or hope. It's like eating a chocolate raisin, it always leaves you wanting more.
