Well Written - Very Detailed
While I don't do a tremendous amount of C++ programming these days, I did find this book to be very informative and well laid out. Easily the best programming book I've read.

A Great way to start
The first 7 years of my career was with C++. Then came C#. I haven't written a line of C++ in about 5 years. But when a really awesome C++ opportunity presented itself I had to go for it and I needed a book to do a quick review. This book was a great review for me. It brought me up to speed quickly and covered most of what I would expect in a very logical order. There are tons of sample programs where you get the complete listing, followed by a discussion of that listing. Most of the important topics are covered. I would have preferred more coverage of the STL but the book does hit the most common classes and algorithms. All in all it was well worth the money.

Rodolfo's review
while the ad said this book was in good condition, the book I received is in terrible condition, is there a way to return it?.

Too Complete!
It is probably the best C++ book if you are looking for a bible-thick, encyclopedic book. For that, it serves both as a reference book and as a very complete textbook.
However, if you are looking for a quicker read on C++, but still with sufficient material that actually allows you to start writing fairly complex codes, Accelerated C++ by Koenig and Moo is a better option.

The best computer language book I've read
I've been away from computer programming for over 15 years. In the past, I played around with BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, Pascal, assembly, and lost interest with C.
Now I'm interested in programming again and decided to give C another try and then learn C++. I read the reviews here about this book and bought a copy from Amazon. And I must say, this book has got to be the best I've read so far for learning a computer language. To my surprise, Mr. Prata explains Standard C in the beginning chapters of the book. I had just read through an old Standard C book already from Stephen Kochan before ordering this one so that I'd have some C under my belt before attempting any reading about C++. It turned out that I didn't have to read Stephen Kochan's book afterall because Mr. Prata goes over all of Standard C in his C++ Primer Plus (5th Edition) book with some humanity behind the text rather than emotion-less text.
Now I'm knee deep in the C++ section of the book and loving it. The book is an interesting read still and there is a constant lightbulb going on above my head. Mr. Prata keeps the reading interesting. This is probably the only computer programming book where I can't wait to get to the next chapter to see what happens after. I wish I could learn all this C++ stuff in one day so I could do all these programming ideas I've had for 15 years. But Mr. Prata has a lot to cover about C++ and he does it in an orderly fashion.
I found that I could not skip over chapters and learn C++ with this book. Mr. Prata did state though that it was ok to skim through two of the chapters on Standard C (which I did). But people not knowing Standard C should not skip over those chapters obviously because the book builds on those topics to explain how C++ works.
A great thing about his book is that after I finish reading it, it will make a valuable reference book because the sections of each chapter are clearly laid out with example code to enter and compile. I've been using MS Visual C++ 6.0 (with Service Pack 6) under Windows XP to compile .exe files (for running in a DOS window as Mr. Prata recommends doing) without any problems. And each section makes references to different compiler behaviors and header files that may come with them. The author uses a pattern when he describes each language feature by first mentioning the technical jargon and then using a situation as an example and then following that with his "in other words" treatment in plain english. So readers have three ways of understanding each new feature being introduced. Plus Mr. Prata reminds the reader of what they've read in previous chapters as a review. And each section of the book also describes the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to proper "bottom-up" object design, C/C++ programming, portability, debugging, maintainability, memory management, file management, etc.
There are a few typos in the example programs that I was able to correct on my own so that they would execute. I would not have been able to correct the bugs without Mr. Prata's excellent explaination of how C++ works. Reading this book can only make one a self-starter in using C++. No programming teacher or computer class is necessary to listen to or sit through to learn from this book.
C++ Primer Plus (5th Edition) has also helped me understand the concept of OOP which I look forward to utilizing in the next computer language I learn, Python.
