Review of Pandora New Tales of the Vampires
This story is about a new vampire named Pandora. Pandora is a strong independent woman who was born in ancient Rome in the times of the rain of Augustus Caesar. It tells of her attraction to mysticism. While also uncovering how she was forced out of her home by the Romans by penalty of death. She later falls for one very familiar vampire named Marius.
This book was rather good except for the occasional times when Anne Rice decides that every minute detail must be described in full. Certain things like details about clothes and the smells of the city are unimportant. This book is mostly on the romantic side and will be a bore to anyone other then those who take pleasure in history and weird vampire love stories.

Excellent performance
The story is very captive. Unusual, at least to me, because I am not really into vampires.
The performance by Janet McTeer is superb. With her versatile voice she makes the characters come `alive` as if listening to a complete cast of actors.

Wonderful book
I have to say that out of all the vampires, Pandora is one of my favorites. It is a refreshing book as it is written from a female's POV, rather than the usual male narrative. While essentially having nothing to do with the grand scheme of the Vampire Chronicles (like how 'the Vampire Armand' explained events that happened in 'Interview with the Vampire' and 'The Vampire Lestat'), since Pandora's story is so contained and separate from the others even though she is Marius' love, it is still a great read. I honestly enjoyed this book, and it's definitely a worthy addition to the Vampire Chronicles. 4.5/5 stars.

Vampire Pandora's life story
Pandora was made vampire at the time that Emperor Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire. She was born as Lydia into a noble Roman family. Only girl in a family of boys she was loved by her father who made sure her education makes her worthy of the best marriage prospects there are. Lydia loves reading and indulges in the works of Ovid, Caesar and Aristotle.
As a young girl, she comes across another noble young man, more than a decade her senior. He is charming and exotic looking as his mother was from a differrent part of the Roman Empire. He has appreciation for her love of words and reason, but Lydia's father does not find him suitable to be her husband.
Circumstances put them together in the Antioch where Lydia flees after her family is killed. Before long, Lydia becomes vamire herself and she changes her name to Pandora. It it thousands of years later that she is asked to write he life story in which she describes how she became a vampire and her unyielding love for the beautiful Marius she loved her entire life.
Interesting story, but thinly developed characters. Do not expect literary greatness as this work is written in simple dialogue-like manner.

I would love to see a movie made of this book!
I can picture a movie made of this book. This is rich and full of history, religion and philosophy. It is also rich with the smart beautiful Marius who adores Pandora, not just for her beauty, but for her brain. He can't have any other woman in life, but this smart beautiful one, who is his match in intellect. However, Marius has to be such a know it all and be the one who is always right and the teacher. Pandora can't stand for this and will have none of this. She wants equality and will not be his pupil. This is so rich and so much how it has always been for women and still, even in the world today. No matter how smart women are, some men can't handle it and have to be right. I'd like to know, if after two thousand years, will Marius chill out? Has he learned anything from his life to be with the woman he loves? We are left to guess and hope it all turns out in the end. Reading Blood and Gold before this is worth it, so you know how Marius feels also. We root for Pandora to get her man in the end and for Marius to get his woman and learn to stop being Mr. know it all!

Not my favorite
I love Anne Rice, so don't get me wrong, but this was not her best story. It starts out a bit scatter brained on Pandora's part so I found it a little hard to follow until it really got into the story. I guess I was just expecting to read about happenings between Pandora and Marius, or Pandora and her Asian vampire that she spent a great deal of time with, but there isn't any of that really. You are basically reading a few new things from Pandora's point of view during Roman times; it doesn't go past that age much. I still liked it because it was Anne Rice, but it was definitely not my favorite of her work. It's a short story so it's not like it will be a complete waste of your time if you like Anne Rice.
