Review of A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash
How could you, a mathematician, believe that extraterrestrials were sending you messages?" the visitor from Harvard asked the West Virginian with the movie-star looks and Olympian manner.
"Because the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the same way my mathematical ideas did," came the answer. "So I took them seriously."
Thus begins the true story of John Nash, the mathematical genius who was a legend by age thirty when he slipped into madness, and who -- thanks to the selflessness of a beautiful woman and the loyalty of the mathematics community -- emerged after decades of ghostlike existence to win a Nobel Prize and world acclaim. The inspiration for a major motion picture, Sylvia Nasar's award-winning biography is a drama about the mystery of the human mind, triumph over incredible adversity, and the healing power of love.

not like the movie at all
Nasar is a good writer and she's obviously done her research. My problem was with the subject matter. In this book John Nash comes across as boring, creepy, and a bit of a jerk. Not the kind of person I care to read about.

Enlightening Book
This is an excellent book on parnoid schitzophrenia. It gave me a better understanding of this illness. The wife, Alicia, in this book is just an outstanding person. First she deals with this illness with her husband, and then learns that her son has inherited the same illness. I don't know how anyone could cope with all that she does.
This book allows us to see deep into the mind of an individual who is so intelligent, yet so ill.

excellent book - more honest than the movie
The book tells much more of the entire story of his life, good and bad. The movie makes him more likable, which is understandable.

Nobel Prize Winner and Schizophrenic
This is a very interesting biography about the Nobel Prize winner, John Nash. The math and economics in this book were beyond my ability to understand. What I focused on was the presentation of Nash's mind, social interactions, mental illness, and bi-sexuality. Interesting aspects of Nash's history are his deadbeat dad, his relationship with Eleanor Stier, and his continuing to hang out at Princeton University when he was ill. I was pleased to learn that his colleagues and students treated Nash with respect even when he was at his worst. I was fascinated by the seeming remission of his schizophrenia as Nash aged.
Nash has a beautiful mind and I applaud Ms.Nasar for writing this book!
