Review of Crimson
The citizens of the Canadian town of Davinsport, Ontario, are no strangers to fear. Evil has walked their streets before, leaving in its wake a legacy of murder, and mad-ness. No one likes to talk about it anymore, and most people have managed to convince themselves it never really happened, but secrecy and denial can only hide the truth for so long. Evil can wait forever. By 1967, what had happened was nothing more than a legend, a scary story told around roaring campfires. Four boyhood friends are about to discover the truth, but no one will believe them. Their parents think the boys?

A Lite Beer Version of King's "It"
In the 1950's, the small town of Dunnville was shocked by an unspeakable crime. Jacob Harrison, a well-liked man butchered his entire family. Even more disgusting was the revelation that he had cannibalized their remains. Jacob hung himself in an upstairs room but when the police went to remove his body, all that was left was the noose and Harrison's body was never found. Cut ahead some twenty years later and a single mom and her son have moved into the old Harrison home. Johnny soon makes friends with other local boys and when they are searching the Harrison farm to find a spot to build a clubhouse, they uncover an old stairway and an underground room. They release a frightening evil entity that haunts their nights and terrifies them during the day. Is this Jacob Harrison? Or something worse?
Crimson calls up comparisons to Stephen King's "It". Like that book, we have a slice of small town life thrown into chaos by pure evil. If anything, Rollo's story is much more visceral than "It" and it's opening prelude is disturbing to say the least. I love these kind of small town horrors because life there can be so claustrophobic that it adds to the terror. And then Rollo starts in with the leeches...I hate leeches, and Crimson is filled with them to the point of nausea. What is also effective about the story is the fact that you don't know what the group of boys is dealing with. Is this really Old Man Harrison, somehow surviving being hung? Or is this the force which drove him to murder and devour his family. The fun is in the discovery!

Not even an okay read!
One of the cover blurbs said the first three pages were just fantastic (or words to that effect). And they pretty much were - they had a real sense of dread. The rest of the book was a let down. The young boys weren't interesting or engaging. They were boys for only a few chapters and then they were adults and even less interesting. As for the plot -- did anyone really understand it? It was so complicated it ended up being laughable. I won't go into it if someone has the time to waste reading it, but I in no way recommend this book.

Great book again
I have read both of Gord Rollo's books and he is a really good writer. His books flow and are hard to put down. I can't wait for his next book.

perryman2
I picked up Crimson on a wim, looking for a quick read over the Spring Break (I am a teacher). It was my first experience with the author, and I found it entertaining. Crimson reminded me of "It", and for some reason, it made me think of "Boys Life" by Robert McCammon. The pace was even and the action was fun...not overly scary, but creepy enough. I look forward to reading more by the author.

Good Read
Not familiar with Gord Rollo, I wasn't sure what to expect. Half-way through the book, I didn't know what to expect next!
Crimson is a pretty quick read with not time spent on character development. The reason? There's no time with everything going on with the story line. The book is extremely fast paced and will keep you guessing until the end what will happen next. And, even at the end, Gord throws you for another loop.
So bottom line, Crimson is a creepy, fun read that will keeping you wondering what will happen next until the last paragraph.
