Review of The Christian Spirit: A Poetic Reflection on Philippians
THE CHRISTIAN SPIRIT: A POETIC REFLECTION ON PHILIPPIANS is a poetic commentary on the Biblical book of Philippians. This is fourth in the series: Poetic Reflections on the Bible. In this book, H. C. Kim, the poet-theologian, explores the inner workings of the theology of St. Paul, the Apostle-Missionary. His analysis is insightful, and he makes complex theology accessible to even those who have never taken a course on the Bible. Paul's words and experiences come alive in insightful poems in ways that are relevant to the 21st century. Those from all walks of life and different cultural, social, racial backgrounds will find poems relevant and meaningful for their lives. This poetry book is perfect for personal devotion/meditation or for reading and discussing in a small group study setting in your church or school. The author has been a visiting professor at Asia Evangelical College and Seminary in Bangalore, India, and at Cebu Bible College in the Philippines. And he has given guest lectures in Russia and Indonesia.

erudite
The erudition in this poetry commentary is baffling. I invested some 50 dollars for a commentary on Philippians and that gave me far less satisfaction as a Christian on a spiritual level. This book is book for personal Bible study or preaching. I can't go without this whenever I study Philippians.

Poet commentator par excellence ha ha ha ha you're joking!
This is one of many Christian 'Dim' poetry books that fail to live up to expectation. The usual topics are covered in a repetitive fashion e.g. Jews and the Zionist conspiracy. The poetry lacks inspiration and is unimaginably dull. I read a few lines and found the word 'Jew' and fell asleep. I advise potential readers against purchasing this predictably boring Christian 'Dim' poetry book.

Poet Commentator Par Excellence!
Mr. Kim is proving to be a great Bible scholar and a wonderful poet at the same time. I was deeply moved on a spiritual level by the poems contained in this book. What was particularly wonderful about this book was that I was able to use the materials in it in the context of Bible study classes at the church. Praise God for gifted individuals like Mr. Kim!

Versatile Poet
Kim proves his poetic worth in this book by showing how versatile he is as a poet. It never ceases to amaze me to see how Kim can relate to the human experience on so many levels. His poetry is a strong proof of that. In this volume of poems, I found that Kim is also a good Bible scholar. I am amazed by how he can put Bible commentary into poetic form. It is very progressive, if you ask me.

Poor
This poetry book was sadly lacking in all aspects. The poetry was dull and the content varied from puerile to religious extremism.
Like most reviewers, I found the poems rather repetitive. I got the impression the author was trying to inspire a Christian 'backlash' against the Jews by reminding them of the Jewish complicity in the murder of Jesus Christ. One or two poems were slightly strange in that they were completely irrelevant to the Philippians e.g. there was a poem about sexy women.
Overall, I must say that Kim has disappointed me with this book since I expected a lot better from a student studying a Ph. D. in Hebrew, Jewish and early Christian studies at Jesus College, Cambridge. As a fellow Cantabrigenarian, I have to say that this work is not typical of the academic standard at Cambridge. It is more in keeping with that at APU. Please avoid at all costs.
