He is 5' 10" (1.78 m) and is also known by his nickname, Nicky. He was still stuttering upon attending Chatsworth High School, but he managed also to be a starter on the baseball team. He first wanted to become a professional baseball player when he was younger but changed his mind when he was 20 years old. He changed his mind to pursue a career in playing for the L.A. Dodgers after hurting his hand a year after graduating high school. He wanted to stop his stuttering and decided to pursue acting in an attempt to help it. His stuttering was noticeable around the age of seven or eight. He did not begin dating until he was about 20 years old and stood clear of strangers because of his stuttering problem. Nicholas said "Every day I still have to remind myself to slow down and concentrate. Constant repetition of tongue-twisters was like lifting weights for me, but patience and persistence have paid off." He stopped acting after doing it for two years because he "couldn't stand the politics in Hollywood." He then went back to school to study medicine but it did not go well and he tried working as a day care counselor, plumber's assistant, waiter, veterinary, janitor, and production assistant for TV show Dave's World.
He is known for his role as Xander Harris in TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), as Kevin Lynch in Criminal Minds (2007–present) and Psycho Beach Party (2000). He returned to the acting world when he was 25 years old. He signed a contract with a new manager and got the role of Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer three months later. He appeared in 143 episodes out of 144 episodes in the series.
He was arrested on the morning of March 17, 2010 after someone called the police stating that there is an intoxicated man. Nicholas allegedly swung at the officers and tried to run away upon their arrival and in a result he was tasered and arrested. He was held on $20,000 bail and charged with one count of resisting arrest, two counts of battery against a police officer and one count of vandalism. He pleaded not guilty on June 19, 2010 to all four charges and received 36 months probation with one-year suspended jail sentence and had to serve/do ten days of community service.
