Review of Final Fantasy XI (11) Online XBOX
What were they thinking? This is the same game that I have been playing for years on PS2 with the resolution upgrade and widescreen support. This installment is still a hostile environment for beginners. I like to play solo most of the time and FF XI kind of requires that you join a party in order to progress. That often yields for an annoying battle system. This is a huge time hog just to get into the good stuff and should basically be steered away from by newcomers. To get to the good stuff may take you 80 or so hours! LOL

LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG
Well this game is not what i would call exactly an easy game. It is chalked full of missions quests enemies to kill and general wonders. The game is beautifully detailed and some of the hard to reach area's are a visual wonder. As an mmorpg ffxi gives you basically a open world to explore with probably over 100 maps that are richly detailed and time consuming to explore. This game can easily take away countless hours of your time without you knowing the time past.
Gameplay
Gameplay is based on cooperation. It is very rare that an individual can go out on their own and complete tasks. Most of the game requires a minimum of another person or a group of 6-18 ppl to complete. As the game progresses and you get further along in xp and lvls the high end tasks require multiple uninterrupted hours with 12 or more members. Usually the rewards are totally random and you are not garanteed anything. Most of the high end items drop maybe once and everyone there wants it so its a toss up on who gets the item which usually is rewarded to the person that plays the game the most and helps out the most. If you are a person with limited time to play its hard to get rewarded correctly.
Controls
On the xbox i would not recommend playing this game without a usb keyboard. Tried it once and it was horrible trying to type without it. Once you have a keyboard the game plays well and is perfectly detailed. Without a keyboard you will be completely miserable so dont do it to yourself.
Graphics
Simply stunning! You see the sun rise and set. The moon rise and set. Ocean waves crash at your feet as you run in the sand. Ghosts haunt you in mines. Tornados touch down in the deserts. Lightning strikes in the backround. You get the idea.
Replayablility
Its end game there is always something to do. Many hours can be spent just doing one thing. You will spend hundreds of hours getting one character to max level with full caped xp traits.
Price
12.95 a month with an extra 1 per character you make past the main.
Value
Once you dish out the money for the game and pay for the keyboard its still below an average xbox game. It pays for itself over time. If you play it a lot and dont mind the monthly fee then it can keep ya home instead of going to the movies etc.
True to past ff games
Yes and no! It has the ffxi feel with jobs you can play like blackmage whitemage Warrior. It makes you feel that you must work as a team like true ff games. Missions are very in depth and have a long backstory. It falls behind on some things like summoning. The pets are while pretty not as we have seen in the past. Weaponskills or limit breaks are pretty eh. Most of the time you wont realize you activated a weaponskill they are that unnoticable. Limit breaks or 2 hours are what they are called do exactly what they say. Take 2 hours to get a new one. Each job has a different 2 hour some are ok like redmage gets chainspell which allows it to cast spells over and over again with no cool off time or casting time. Some are terrible where for example samurai gets to do 3 weaponskills at a time instead of one.
Anyway i give this game a 4/5 for fun because when you first start there is nothing like it the game is just amazing. The point off is for it limiting you to have to party.
Overall i give it a 3 since it is a bit old you have to pay for it a month and it gets really tiresome doing the 3-4 hour events on a regular basis.

Solid game with beyond poor platform support
Well after playing FF11 on the PC for its first few years and coming back to it in the past week the physical game itself is certainly improved for anybody starting out fresh in the world of FF11.
However because of a large dashboard update to the Xbox 360 Platform many months ago its apparently put FF11 into a MAJOR state of shock... there are serious issues that have made me close my account within five days and that are completely unrelated to the solid, physical gameplay...
Installation takes a little over an hour and the update, a few hours more (Give or take 4 hours on cable internet).
You MUST Log Out of FF11, log out of the play online viewer and CLOSE play online viewer from within itself. If you EVER shutdown your console from within the game itself OR the playonline menu OR use quickmenu to switch to anther game without selecting close from the login screen, your entire game is corrupted!
EVERY time this happens you are forced to reformat the ENTIRE HARD DRIVE!!! Thats right, 3 calls to technical support and that is the "solution"... more like contingency plan... If you happen to have two complete xbox 360 consoles there are ways to TRICK it into showing you the error message thats blocking you but most of us have a single system.
Further more, the game is not on your games list, its stored in cache which means that if you go to clear the system cache it will corrupt your copy of FF11 also prompting another reformat.
There was no forewarning of this at any time during installation. After experiencing 4 hours, I logged out of the game. At the POL menu, logged out of that, then used my controller to power down the system. After coming home from campus today it throws legions of Disc Read Errors at you which are NOT disc read errors. This is a problem documented all over the place on the internet.
This is also not a problem you can fully control. During a garrison the system locked up on me after the first reformat (as well as a few other random times) and since you didn't exit through the play online viewer... here goes another 5 hours...
This is reformat 5, every time I talk to their customer support I get total bull... Its a complete shame that such a solid game is destroyed by lack of support from a company that I used to have extremely high regards for in which now has given me some of the worst customer service of my life.
DO NOT buy this game for the XBOX 360 System EVER! Buy it for the PC or the Playstation. If you happen to have a second Xbox 360 console lying around, then by all means give it a shot. Outside of that extreme technical block, the controls worked solid and there were ZERO issues outside of this. But an issue this big and time consuming destroys any likely hood of advancing in such an immense game.

Great Game, Some Problems
I bought two copies for two of my sons. They love the game, but had issues with disc read problems. This game has its own log in and log out screen. If you just log out using the microsoft screen it can create corrupted files. The next time you try to sign in, you get a message that the program cannot read the disc or that there are corrupted files. The solution that worked for us is to reformat the hard drive and install the game to the hard drive. That includes installing the POL (Player on line) sign in and out part of the game program. Since installing to the Hard Drive, my sons have had no problems, even when there was a power outage while they were playing.
Other that that problem, my sons love the game and play it regularly. I am not thrilled that it costs them about $14 a month to play the game. If they create another character, it is an additional couple of dollars per month.

Final Fantasy
Overall, it's a great game, but it something to get used to at first. Setup is is easy as long as you read and go by the directions. But if I was you, don't stop the loading till it finishes, or else it won't let you play the game or download it. That would definitely be a waste. Otherwise, Read the instructions and you should be okay with it.

The "setup game" game...
I've played this game before, and have enjoyed - the price being much lower these days has brought back my interest. My biggest complaint is the 3 hour long setup process. If you don't have a USB keyboard to plug into your XBox 360, steer clear! You will have to enter your address twice, through their horribly developed proprietary "PlayOnline" interface. This process is not for the faint of heart, or the easily agitated (I am the later of the two). Once you get into the game, well, it's what you expect - nothing special, another way to avoid talking to people in RL.
If the next game goes through this "PlayOnline" junk, then it is off my list! Just when you think you are done, WHAM! another download and setup screen!
