The Strangers (2008) is an American mystery thriller horror movie that was filmed in Timmonsville and Florence, South Carolina, USA. First-time director and co-writer Bryan Bertino did an excellent job executing his first movie. Although the director did an excellent job, I gave this movie a score of five because it was a cliche. He did good for his first movie and better than some well known directors who are established. The movie contains intense moments, violence, suspense, sexual references/content, blood, scares and bad language.
James Hoyt (Scott Speedman) proposed to his girlfriend Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) at James parents vacation house. The couple went to the house after a friend’s wedding reception. Jame’s called his friend Mike after Kristen did not accept his proposal to come and pick him up in the morning. A blonde woman knocks on their door soon after asking for someone by the name of Tamara. The couple told her that there is no one there by the name, and she left. James went by himself to buy cigarettes for Kristen and soon after the blonde female returned knocking on the door asking for Tamara again. Kristen was scared and did not open the door but seconds later she heard noises in the back and discovered her cellphone is missing. She grabbed a kitchen knife and scanned the place to find a man with a mask on staring at her. She ran and hid in the bedroom until her boyfriend returned. James decided to be a heroine and try to figure out what happened after Kristen told him about the previous events after he left. He discovers his car tires are slashed; windshield is smashed, and his cellphone battery is gone and is on the table whereas he had left his phone in the car.
As they try to escape this terror, someone in a mask drives their truck into James’ car. James took his shotgun in the home as they hid in the closet in the hallway. James accidently shot and killed Mike as he was scanning the house to see what happened because he looked like a train wreck. Watch the movie to see what happens to Kristen, James and the three masked people. It was a nice watch and might be something I show to friends when they come over. I also gave this movie a five because there was not much information about the characters, and I could not connect to them. The acting, set, costumes and creepiness were nice done.
