The Beast Within Review

In the beginning of the movie you see a woman getting raped by a man-creature of some sort. The movie...

The Beast Within (1982) is a 1h 38-min rated R American horror movie that was shot in Bolton, Mississippi; Jackson, Mississippi; Raymond, Mississippi, USA and is a loose adaptation of Edward Levy‘s 1981 novel, The Beast Within. Director Philippe Mora (Mad Dog Morgan (1976), The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987), Communion (1989), Brother Can You Spare a Dime (1975)) did not execute this film to perfection, but I blame the plot hole filled the script and the editing department. I had high hopes for this movie in particular with the tagline that dare viewers to watch the last thirty minutes of the film without being scared.

Eli MacCleary (Ronny Cox - Total Recall (1990), RoboCop (1987), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Deliverance (1972)) and his newly wedded wife Caroline are on their honeymoon in 1964 in Nioba, MI. Eli and Caroline (Bibi Besch - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Tremors (1990), Steel Magnolias (1989), The Day After (1983)) stops at a gas station for directions and shortly after faced one bad encounter/event after another. The couple got a flat tire not too long after leaving the gas station, typical of any horror movie; the guy leaves the girl in the car so that he can go for help. Eli left in Caroline the car so that he can head back to the gas station for help and thought that good ole Caroline would be safer in the car. Well, Caroline heard a noise in the woods and … yes, you guessed it - she exited the vehicle and wandered around the dark, creepy woods. Something that appears humanlike attacked her and raped her - what is it that raped the new bride?

Skip forward to about 17 years later where Eli and Caroline are anxious to find information on their son’s medical condition because doctors cannot figure out what is killing him slowly. Caroline, Eli and their son Michael (Paul Clemens - The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon (2008), A Death in Canaan (1978), Daybreak (2001)) heads to the town of Nioba where they hope to find answers as to what is killing Michael. Caroline and Eli are also hoping to find out what/whom raped Caroline about 17 years ago. They were shocked to discover the townspeople are not too friendly and definitely not welcoming after hearing the questions the family is asking.

Michael is angry at everything and everyone except Amanda Platt (Katherine Moffat - Spy Hard (1996), Boone (1983-1984), International Airport (1985)) who likes Michael but has an overly protective father. Michael has a side of him that I will not spoil so see the movie and leave a comment below to tell us what you think of Michael’s other side/personality. There were too many unanswered questions - actually, more unanswered questions than answered questions. There are glaring plot holes, goofs, many mishaps but the movie was sort of fun and not that chaotic to watch. One of my major questions is what did Michael become? The Beast Within is the type of movie that you watch with an open mind and just for the fun of it - go with the flow kind of movie. There are too many things that do not make sense and if you think too much about - it still would not make sense so do not try to watch the movie several times because you will only be wasting time because it still will not make sense. All of the actors gave us average performances that were not bad or good, so it did not help the film. The gore and scare factor was there, so I give this movie a five.
