The Mummy Returns Review
Synopsis:The mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to a museum in London, where he once again wakes and begins his campaign of rage and terror.
The Mummy Returns (2001) is a 2h 10-min American action fantasy adventure film that is the sequel to The Mummy (1999) and was shot in Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Petra, Jordan and several locations in England, UK. The movie had an estimated budget of $98 million and grossed over $433 million at the box office. Director and writer Stephen Sommers (The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), The Scorpion King (2002), Van Helsing (2004)) did an okay job executing this film that could have been better.
The Scorpion King leads his army on a quest in 3067 BC to conquer the world which took about seven years for them not to gain victory but to be defeated by Thebes leading them to be exiled to the desert of Ahm Shere. The Scorpion King’s (Dwayne Johnson - San Andreas (2015), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)) men died from heat exhaustion. He then decides to trade his soul to Anubis for the power to defeat his enemies leading him to receive a legion of jackal warriors.
Skip to 1933 where we see Rick (Brendan Fraser - The Mummy (1999), The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), Bedazzled (2000)), his wife Evelyn and their son Alex explore a ruined mortuary temple in ancient Thebes. The family found the Bracelet of Anubis, which locks onto Alex (Freddie Boath - The Pillars of the Earth (2010), Nomad (2012), The Children (2008)) in London. The negative of the bracelet locking on to Alex is that it gives Alex visions directing him to Ahm Shere, and if Alex does not go there within seven days, then the bracelet will kill him when the sun shines on the Scorpion King’s pyramid.
An Egyptian cult kidnapped Evelyn (Rachel Weisz - The Mummy (1999), Constantine (2005), The Fountain (2006)) so that they can sacrifice her. The cult resurrected Imhotep because they want to use his power to defeat the Scorpion King, which will give him command of the Anubis’ army that will help him conquer the world. Rick, Medjai Ardeth Bay and Evelyn’s brother Jonathan (John Hannah - The Mummy (1999), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Sliding Doors (1998)) set out to save Evelyn. Lock-Nah (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje - G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), The Bourne Identity (2002), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Lost (2005-2006)) kidnaps Alex and takes him to Egypt. The movie progresses to be an astounding watch as the family along with a pilot goes to rescue Alex.
The Mummy Returns did not receive a higher score than six because of many reasons, and one of those reasons is that there were not enough attention paid to the characters. The plot/constant plot turns, special effects, infinite action sequences, and visual appeals were all excellent. I laughed when there was humor and enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of the sets and sceneries were breathtaking and mesmerizing - I am a sucker for beautiful landscapes. The makeup department did a fantastic job as well as the costume department. I would recommend this movie to all Mummy fans but please do not get your hopes up because this film is nowhere as good as the original.
