Synopsis:Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.
Trick ‘r Treat (2007) is an American-Canadian comedy anthology horror movie that centers on four stories related to Halloween. Sam is a short trick-or-treater, and he is the one that ties all of the stories together. Sam is seen wearing an old orange pajama and a sack over his head with eyes, and he shows up every time someone breaks the Halloween traditions. This movie is an original piece of work that I watch every year, and it does not get boring. The cover photo for this movie explains a lot about the movie and makes you wonder and question the image itself before watching the movie. Overall - I recommend all horror fans to watch this movie. There are flaws and mishaps but watch it with an open mind and you will love it for what it is. The movie contains nudity, sexual content, violence, gore, suspense, unpredictable moments, thrills, intense sitting on the edge of your seat scenes, bad language and frightening scenes.
Segment - Opening
Emma (Leslie Bibb - Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Law Abiding Citizen (2009), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)) does not like Halloween. Her husband Henry (Tahmoh Penikett - Man of Steel (2013), Battlestar Galactica (2004), Dollhouse (2009)) loves all holidays. He decorated their year with numerous ghost-scarecrows. Henry is serious about Halloween traditions. He warns Emma not to blow out a jack-o-lantern after they return home from a party on Halloween night. Henry said it was against Halloween tradition to blow out a jack-o-lantern on Halloween. Emma ignored Henry and met her fate that same night by an unknown murderer. She was murdered in front of trick or treaters. It was amazing to see how Emma’s body was decorated after being murdered. She has a lolly pop and other accessories. This is a must watch. I knew Emma was going to die but not the way she did which was an intense moment for me.
Segment - The Principal
Steven Wilkins (Dylan Baker - Spider-Man 2 (2004), Trick ‘r Treat (2007), Spider-Man 3 (2007), The Cell (2000)) is a principal. He saw his neighbor Charlie (Brett Kelly - Bad Santa (2003), Trick ‘r Treat (2007), Unaccompanied Minors (2006), The Sandlot 2 (2005)) stealing his candy from his yard. Steven decides to lecture Charlie on stealing while carving his pumpkin and gave Charlie one piece of candy after they were done. My view on Steven changed after Charlie ate the candy because he poisoned the candy with cyanide. This was a twist that I did not see coming. Steven then buried Charlie in his backyard with another body. The segment goes on to showing something bizarre happening to Steven neighbor, Mr. Kreeg (Brian Cox). I was blown away to see what Steven gave his son to carve and how calm they are while carving a human head. This is also one segment that has to be seen by all horror fans with an open mind.
Segment - The School Bus Massacre Revisited
Macy (Britt McKillip - Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures (2010), Mission to Mars (2000), My Little Pony: The Princess Promenade (2006)) and four friend went to a nearby rock. Macy began to tell her friends about a local urban legend that involves a school bus massacre on Halloween. Macy told them about a group of "retard" kids in 1977 that was not wanted by their parents because of humiliation. The parents told the kids that they are sending them to a school but instead paid a bus driver to kill all of the kids so that they would not have to deal with them again. The driver chained all of the kids to their seat, but one kid escaped. That kid tried to drive the bus to their home from that rock area that Macy and her friends are right now. The kid accidently drove the bus into the lake and killed everyone except the bus driver.
Macy made the dead kids from years ago return when she kicked a jack-o-lantern into the lake. Macy and her friends are being chased by the dead kids and they capture Sara. This segment was creepy as ever with little kids coming back from the dead. It is a segment that I will not watch in the night again unless I want to be terrified.
Segment - Surprise Party
Laurie (Anna Paquin - The Piano (1993), Jane Eyre (1996), True Blood (2008), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)) is a 22-year-old virgin. She is getting ready with her older sister Danielle (Lauren Lee Smith) and friends, Maria (Rochelle Aytes) and Janet (Moneca Delain). Laurie is frustrated at the other girls talking about boys and told them that she will join them later. A vampire attacked Laurie as she was walking to meet the girls. This segment has a serious twist to it because it was nothing I had in mind. Virginity in this segment means something totally different. Laurie made it safely to the party with the vampire who turns out to be Steven Wilkens, the principal. The other girls picked up strangers for their dates and took them to a bonfire where strange things will occur.
Segment - Sam
Kreeg (Brian Cox - Troy (2004), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), Braveheart (1995), The Bourne Identity (2002)) lives alone with his dog and totally dislikes Halloween. He dislikes Halloween so much that he chases away trick or treaters from his home/yard. Kreeg pulled off Sam’s (Quinn Lord - Date and Switch (2014), Imaginaerum (2012), The Hole (2009)) sack that was over his head after Sam attacked him. It was a sight to see Sam’s head resembling a jack-o-lantern and a human skull at the same time. The two fought and a gun was used. I love how all of the segments intertwined, and we see that Kreeg was the bus driver from one of the previous segments and also the neighbor of Steven Wilkin. It makes me wonder if Sam will also be poisoned since his lollipop got stuck in the cyanide candy.
Kreeg is now giving out the poisoned candy to trick-or-treaters while he has bandages on him and is bruised. Kreeg saw when Sam punished Emma by killing her for not obeying the Halloween tradition. I love the scenes when the dead school bus kids visited Kreeg and sang trick-or-treat - it was priceless. Director and writer Michael Dougherty (Superman Returns (2006), X-Men 2 (2003), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)) did a fabulous job with this Halloween masterpiece.
