Review of WITCHMAKER-SPECIAL EDITION
(1969) Anthony Eisley, Thordis Brandt, Alvy Moore, John Lodge, Burt Mustin. A series of brutal witchcraft-oriented murders has taken place in a lonely southern bayou. Moore takes a research group deep into the bayou to investigate suspected paranormal events. One of his crew is the descendent of an ancient witch. When the local group of witches finds this out, they decide that she must be brought into their satanic web. In spite of a low budget, THE WITCHMAKER is really a pretty good movie with lots of creepy bayou atmosphere, which in turn is complimented by a well-done music score. Considered by some to be the ultimate movie about witchcraft. Uncut. This film has partial nudity, gore, and a number of genuinely scary scenes. PLEASE NOTE: This is a two-disc special edition set that contains both the flat and scope versions of this film. The flat version is from a gorgeous 16mm original print with beautiful color and great definition. The definition is so sharp that you can actually see the tiny hairs around the first victim's naval. There is also a tiny bit of image visible at the top and bottom of the picture that is not visible on the scope edition. The scope edition itself also boasts great color and has a bright picture and good contrast. A great set. Recommended for sure.

The Only Option For the Moment
I won't go into great detail about the movie itself except to say it's a very low budget effort from 1969. Many might be familiar with it from showings on TV throughout the 1970s. For those who are interested, the Sinister "special edition" is a DVD-R of a VHS tape, itself sourced from a very mediocre print. The 2nd disc is a "scope" version of the same. Extras include one trailer. So if you want it, this is the only "DVD" option as of this writing. It would be great if this could get a better quality release as the film is not without its charm and features earnest performances from most of the cast (little known John Lodge in particular) but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
