Red Riding Hood Review

Synopsis:

Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure.

Red Riding Hood (2011) is a 1h 40-min American dark mystery fantasy historical romance that is very loosely based on the Little Red Riding Hood folk tale. The movie was beautifully retold in a modern classic movie with the same classic story we all grew up with and love. The townsfolk have been living in fear knowing that there is a werewolf in around their home. The townspeople carry on their everyday duties including hunting, feeding their families, and living in fear while doing everything. Director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight (2008), Thirteen (2003), Lords of Dogtown (2005)) did a fine job directing this horror romance werewolf movie. The film contains horror, romance, suspense, action, tension, twist, deceit, mystery violence, and fantasy.

Valerie (Amanda Seyfried - Mamma Mia! (2008), Les Miserables (2012), Dear John (2010)) is an intelligent young girl who has been arranged to marry a local boy from a good background. Valerie’s mother Suzette (Virginia Madsen - Sideways (2004), The Number 23 (2007), Candyman (1992), The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)) knows that Valerie loves Peter and does not want to marry who they want her to marry. Peter (Shiloh Fernandez - Evil Dead (2013), Deadgirl (2008), The East (2013)) and Valerie have been playing together since childhood and is accustomed to the lifestyle they are living. The panicking townspeople call in a specialist, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman - The Dark Knight Rises (2012), The Dark Knight (2008), Leon: The Professional (1994), Batman Begins (2005)) after Valerie’s sister was murdered by a werewolf. Solomon brought along his armed soldiers as the werewolf is killing anyone in its path. The village was troubled by the special relationship Valerie and the wolf.

I am a sucker for romance movies, and Red Riding Hood did it for me with its warm underlying love story with horror mixed. Amanda Seyfried gave us the best performance out of all of the cast in the movie with her different emotions soothing each scene accordingly. The ending plot twist was not foreseen and surprised me, but that does not mean that there was not suspense and twists throughout the movie because the film kept me on my toes guessing what was going to happen next. Red Riding Hood is a romance horror movie that I will see again because it was an exceptionally good watch.
