Paranormal Activity Review

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.

Paranormal Activity (2007) is a 1h 26-min rated R independent American found footage supernatural horror film that was shot in Bavarian Drive, Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego, California, USA and San Diego, California. Director and writer Oren Peli (Chernobyl Diaries (2012), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)) also was the producer, photographer, and editor for this film which is considered to be the first entry in the Paranormal Activity series. Paranormal Activity is chronologically the third film in the series. Oren did a fantastic job executing this found footage movie with cameras that were set up throughout the home. Paranormal Activity had a low estimated budget of about $15 thousand to make and grossed over $193 million at the box office.

Paranormal Activity revolves around Katie (Katie Featherston - The River (2012), Becoming (2015), Solace for the Unloved (2015)) and Micah who are a young couple being haunted by supernatural entities in their new house in San Diego. Katie mentions that she has been haunted by an evil spirit since she was a child so Micah did what a caring husband would do and comforted her. Micah (Micah Sloat - Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Scream Awards 2010 (2010)) sets up cameras in their bedroom to record the supernatural occurrences.

Psychic Dr. Fredrichs (Mark Fredrichs - Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006), Emerald Nights (2010)) informs Katie that it is a demon that feeds off of the negative energy that is tormenting her and will not stop. Fredrichs told Katie to contact Dr. Johann Averies (Spencer Marks - VooDoo Curse: The Giddeh (2006), The Ladies & The Gents (2013)) who is a demonologist. Micah does not believe Fredrichs and thinks it is all about money. Soon after, the strange occurrences started to get stronger and more dangerous as time passes on. Will anyone be able to help the young couple who desperately needs all the help they can get?

I did not have good thoughts about this film as I thought it was going to be a waste of my time because how can one person (Oren Peli) take on so many roles in a movie that is already low budget. Well, I was wrong because Oren did a fantastic job bringing us this amazingly low budget movie that made some horror fans think several dreadful thoughts before closing their eyes at night. This movie showed us how silence and waiting on the inevitable could be just as entertaining as fast-cutting scenes. The movie contains frightening/terrifying scenes, suspense, tension, cheap but effective jump scares and cheap found footage style that worked. It does not take a lot of money or cast members to make an entertaining movie, but it does take a skilled director, writer, and skilled actors to make an enjoyable film.

Paranormal Activity favorite quote: While Micah is discussing demons, Micah says "Basically, they’re these malevolent evil spirits that only exist to cause pain and commit evil for their amusement. It’s pretty creepy- I mean, they stalk people for years, like decades, and sometimes they’re really intelligent in the way they do things to freak you out."
