A Field in England Review
Synopsis:Amid the Civil War in 17th-century England, a group of deserters flee from battle through an overgrown field. Captured by an alchemist, the men are forced to help him search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field.
A Field in England (2013) is a low budget Indie British thriller film that is set during the mid-17th century English Civil War and is filmed/shot in black and white. This movie was first released in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2013 in movie theaters, DVD, video on demand and aired on free TV on the day it released. Director Ben Wheatley (Editors: Formaldehyde, Untitled Ideal Film, Kill List) did not stand up to his standards when comparing this movie to Kill List. It was original and awesomely done with its dialogue and costumes. He is the producer of this movie and also one of two writers and editors. A Field in England contains visual nude scenes of a man’s p***is but it nothing sexual, bad language, gore, violence, dark humor, suspense and intense moments.
Reece Shearsmith (TV Series - The Widower, Inside No. 9, V) did a terrific job playing Whitehead who is an intelligent innocent pessimist. Whitehead is in the field with feeble-minded Friend (Richard Glover - Into the Woods, Cuban Fury, The Day They Came to Suck Out Our Brains!), cantankerous grumpy warrior Jacob (Peter Ferdinando - Hyena, 300: Rise of an Empire, The Mimic), selfish and cruel Irishman O’Neill (Michael Smiley - Glassland, Orthodox, The Devil Went Down to Islingto) and O’Neill’s ardent footman, Cutler (Ryan Pope - Casualty, Coronation Street, Celluloid).
A Field in England is about Whitehead, Friend and Jacob who find themselves fleeing the gun smoke and fighting by running across the field. They made their way across the field to meet treasure hunters (Cutler and O’Neill) who believe the treasure is hidden in the fields. O’Neill knows Whitehead from a previous run in and he thinks that he knows exactly where the treasure is hidden in the field. O’Neill seems to be the boss who tells Jacob and Friend to dig for the treasure while leaving Cutler to supervise. One of those three guys shot and killed one of them while they were fighting and the movie takes off - I am not saying anything more about the movie because I do not want to spoil it.
What is so special about the field? The field seems to be a kind of purgatory for the character and they have to prove themselves worthy to reach the afterlife or to return to their mortal lives. You will have to watch the movie to know what I meant by explaining what the field is, what it has to do with the characters and the movie.
