Abandoned Mine Review

Five school friends seek adventure on Halloween night in an abandoned, haunted mine, only to find to their horror that the ghostly rumors may be true as they fight for survival.

Abandoned Mine (2013) is an American adventure mystery horror movie that disappointed me. Director, producer and co-writer Jeff Chamberlain (Rivals (1981), Billy Jack Goes to Washington (1977), As the World Turns (1956)) did a terrible job for his first time. He was an actor who last acted in 1990. He seems to take a huge break and decide to become a producer, writer and director after 13 years. I am wondering if he likes his finished product, Abandoned Mines. The movie was meant as a horror movie but did not spook me or my 12 year old at all. I was bored out of my mind watching this movie on Netflix and kept on pausing to see how much longer the movie has. I only decided to watch it out because I wanted to write this review, and I was also curious to see if there was at least one good enjoyable scary part.

Abandoned Mine is about a group of five friends who wanted to celebrate Halloween differently. They went to an old abandoned mine, Jarvis Mine that is said to be haunted. One of the friends tells the story of the disaster that took place there about one hundred years ago. The mine is haunted by the Jarvis family that was murdered there. The group could not leave the mine as it was storming outside and out of natural young human curiosity, they decided to explore the mine and went deeper into it. The friends found a toy that might have belonged to Jarvis’ daughter, tarantulas and various other items which does not give off the spook effect it should. The group became stranded in the mine as someone burns the rope that they needed to climb back up. What will the group do?

The mine was not creepy and did not give me the chills or made me a little scared at all. The actors did a good job with their acting part because it was believable acting. I gave this movie a three because the cinematography was okay, and the sound effects were not bad. I could not relate to the characters and felt no emotions toward them.

The five school friends were:
Sharon - Alexa PenaVega - Spy Kids (2001), Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008), Sleepover (2004)
Brad - Reiley McClendon - The Flyboys (2008), The Kid (2000), Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-Off (2003)
Laurie - Saige Thompson - Life on a Stick (2005), Love Is the Drug (2006), Racing for Time (2008)
Ethan - Charan Prabhakar - High School Musical 2 (2007), The Last Man(s) on Earth (2012), One Man’s Treasure (2009)
Jim - Adam Hendershott - Sydney White (2007), Celtic Pride (1996), Radio Flyer (1992)
