The Lovely Bones Review

Centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family - and her killer - from purgatory. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.

The Lovely Bones (2009) is an American supernatural drama that would not disappoint you. Director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)) gives us another awesome flick to watch. He is one great director that I always try of watch… all of his films. The movie contains extreme violence, gore, bloody; action-packed, intense scenes, bad language and scenes not suitable for young kids.

Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan - Atonement (2007), Hanna (2011), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), The Lovely Bones (2009)) was 14 years old in 1973 when she dreamt of becoming a photographer. She was living with her family in Pennsylvania when a rape was implied but not shown with her older neighbor, George Harvey (Stanley Tucci - The Hunger Games (2012), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), The Terminal (2004), The Devil Wears Prada (2006)). George talked Susie into going with him to his underground den and would not let her leave when she felt uncomfortable - there was nothing to see after he grabbed her so as I said, it is an assumption/implication that he raped her. The story becomes interesting when her father went looking for her as she called out to her father; he does not respond. She realizes that George murdered her after seeing her bracelet hanging on his faucet and then she was stuck in between heaven and Earth after screaming her head off.

Susie’s father Jack (Mark Wahlberg - The Fighter (2010), Lone Survivor (2013), Prisoners (2013)) began investigating Susie’s murder without a break because he believed that his daughter’s murderer is by someone she knew. Jack notifies Detective Len Fenerman (Michael Imperioli - The Sopranos (1999), Goodfellas (1990), Shark Tale (2004)) of his suspicions. They found no evidence to arrest George after investigating him. Susie started her own investigation on George and discovered that he murdered seven other girls and intended to kill one more. After a few more events, George is becoming a wreck because he is afraid of being caught.
Will Susie’s remains be found? Will George be prosecuted for killing her and all the other girls? Will Susie be able to accomplish her mission and go to heaven? How is the family dealing with this devastating situation?

Watch the movie and pay attention or you will inevitably get lost. It was a beautiful watch that I would watch one day again. The actors all did a phenomenal job with their parts and acting was realistic. I felt the pain of the father and the family as they go through this tragedy. The movie is a must see for all. The sets, lighting, cinematography, and cast were all excellent.
