Cursed Review

Synopsis:

A werewolf loose in Los Angeles changes the lives of three young adults, who, after being mauled by the beast, learn they must kill their attacker if they hope to change their fate to avoid becoming werewolves too.

Cursed (2005) is an American romance horror-comedy film that director Wes Craven (Scream (1996), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), New Nightmare (1994), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)) did an average job on. I assumed that Wes Craven was going to give us an outstanding movie that we will want to see again and again since he did not direct a film in over four years but I was wrong. I know that the movie might have fallen short because of the screenplay from writer Kevin Williamson (Scream 2 (1997), The Vampire Diaries (2009), Scream (1996), Scream 3 (2000)), but he has talent. Kevin has written the screenplays of some excellent TV series episodes that I enjoyed immensely and also did a fantastic job with a few movie screenplays, so I am not sure if Wes or Kevin did not put their best foot forward for Cursed. The movie was in no doubt a cliche to many other movies out there, but I have seen movies that resemble other movies excel in so many ways, so the movie did not flourish as a result of it being a cliche.

Jenny Tate (Mya - The Blues (2003), Chicago (2002), Moulin Rouge! (2001), The Disco Ball (2003)) and her friend Becky Morton decide to get their fortune told about a boy at a pier in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The fortune teller, Zela (Portia de Rossi - Arrested Development (2003), Ally McBeal (1997), Stigmata (1999)) told the girls that they will suffer a horrible fate, but the girls thought of it as nonsense and walked away. It did not take long for Becky (Shannon Elizabeth - American Pie 2 (2001), American Pie (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Thir13en Ghosts (2001)) to notice her friend Jenny is missing and cannot be found anywhere on the pier. Skip forward - Becky is seen in her vehicle when it collided with Jimmy Myers (Jesse Eisenberg -
The Social Network (2010), Now You See Me (2013), Zombieland (2009), Adventureland (2009)) sister Ellie vehicle and an animal/creature. Jimmy and Ellie (Christina RicciSleepy Hollow (1999), Monster (2003), The Opposite of Sex (1998), Black Snake Moan (2006)) tried to help Becky, but it was too late as an animal dragged her and ripped her body in half. The animal slashes Ellie and Jimmy with its claws, but they managed to escape alive. The officers did not show much interest when Jimmy said it was a wolf resulting in the officers to report it as a bear or cougar attack.

Jimmy immediately started to research wolves in California upon getting home and has no doubt that the creature that attacked them and killed the female was a werewolf. Ellie started to have a sudden attraction to the smell of blood while Ellie also has the same temptation but denies it although he is much stronger and more aggressive now. Will the sister and brother team realize that they are becoming werewolves? What happens to Jenny? Is Jenny dead or alive? I enjoyed this movie for what it offers but thought of it to be an average werewolf movie that I will not see again. Every other aspect of the movie was excellent except for the direction and script. Actors did a fantastic job with their performances as well as the cinematographer, music, sound, makeup, special effects and editing department.

The movie was extremely predictable with little suspense and not so much comedy. Cursed contains brief nude scenes, sexual references, extreme violence, gore, bad language, creature, werewolf, decapitation, massacre, eaten alive, black comedy, supernatural power and shapeshifting.

A few other things Cursed contained are: stabbed to death, stabbed in the throat, howling, animal killing, cut into pieces, wolfman, human becoming an animal, wolf, lycanthrope, walking on the ceiling, satire, monster, female werewolf, bloody scratches, animal attack, werewolf bite, male rear nudity, head cut off, raw meat, off-screen murder, mythical creature, sword, shot in the head, fortune teller, transformation, dog attack and lycanthropy.
