10 Amazing Facts About Poltergeist
Poltergeist (1982) was originally supposed to feature evil aliens instead of evil ghosts and was initially titled Night Skies. Writer and producer Steven Spielberg changed that idea over the years before finalizing the Poltergeist story.
Many believe that even though Tobe Hooper is credited as the Poltergeist director that Steven Spielberg was the movies’ true director. Steven Spielberg could not direct both E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) due to contracting, but Poltergeist has Spielberg’s look and feel.
There is an awkward jump cut after the scene in the kitchen where the Freelings are first toying with the paranormal presence by moving things across the kitchen floor. This weird jump cut scene is because a line was cut where Diane Freeling says that they "will go out to Pizza Hut" with Steve Freeling replying "I hate Pizza Hut." Pizza Hut did not like this, and the lines were cut.
In the scene where Carol Anne Freeling approaches the static TV before the ghost hand reaches out for her, the time on the TV says 2:37 am like Room 237 from The Shining (1980). Is there a Shining connection in Poltergeist?
Steven Spielberg’s hands make a cameo in the gruesome mirror scene where his hands proceed to rip the face off one of the guys from the paranormal team.
Drew Barrymore auditioned for the role of Carl Anne Freeling, but Spielberg thought she would fit the part better in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) as Gertie. Heather O’Rourke’s sister auditioned for the role of Carol Anne and Spielberg noticed her and cast her instead.
The poltergeist referred to as The Beast as always intended to be a creepy old man.
There is a Poltergeist deleted scene where the clown doll comes to life during Robbie Freeling’s birthday party and bites him while no one is looking.
Real skeletons were used to create the final scenes where the skeletons come out of the yard. There were simply cheaper than creating skeletons. This gave birth to the terrifying Poltergeist Curse theory.
The Poltergeist Curse came about because many of the cast members have met with gruesome and tragic fates like murder and many deaths. Is it an Urban Legend?
