Top 10 Gremlins Facts

  1. Gremlins (1984) writer Chris Columbus initially was involved in an E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) sequel where many aliens came down to Earth to run amock. That E.T. sequel was scrapped, but the idea of little beasties running amock stayed with Columbus. E.T. did have a small plush toy cameo in the Gremlins film.

  2. Tim Burton was considered to direct Gremlins (1984) but had not directed a full feature film yet, so Joe Dante was chosen as the director.

  3. The original Gremlins script was too violent and was toned down to appeal to a wider audience. The dog Barnie was eaten, and Billy’s mom head was chopped off.

  4. Phoebe Cates cast as Kate was not a casting choice many agreed with because of her topless scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Zach Galligan was cast as Billy just because he had outstanding chemistry with Cates.

  5. Gremlins had an Atari game.

  6. Gremlins was filmed in Hill Valley later used to film Back to the Future (1985).

  7. The scene where Kate talks about her father dressing up as Santa Claus, getting stuck in the chimney, and dying was a controversial scene. Joe Dante kept the scene even though Universal and Spielberg wanted it cut.

  8. Gremlins helped to create the PG-13 rating.

  9. There is a Disney Gremlins book published that has small similarities to this Gremlins. The Gremlins creatures are both mythical creatures who revel in destruction.

  10. Gizmo was meant to be the primary villain transforming into the evil Gremlin Stripe. However, that idea was cut because it was thought that Gizmo was too cute.
