Gillian Leigh Anderson was born on August 9, 1968 in Chicago, IL, USA. Gillian is 5' 3" (1.60 m) and has siblings Zoe Anderson and Aaron Anderson. Her brother Aaron died at age 30 in 2011 of a brain tumor. Her mother is Rosemary Anderson, is a computer analyst, and her father Homer Edward Anderson III owns a film post-production company. Her ancestry line is German, Irish and English. She resided in Puerto Rico for 15 months sometime after her birth and then moved to the United Kingdom until she was 11 years old. She moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of eleven.

She went to Fountain Elementary school and graduated from City High-Middle School in 1986. She began acting in her freshman year in high school although she was interested in biology. She then became a student intern at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre & School of Theatre Arts. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990 from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago. She also went to Cornell University to be in their National Theatre of Great Britain's summer program.

Gillian worked as a waitress to support herself after moving to New York when she was 22 years old. She began her acting career at the Manhattan Theatre Club in Alan Ayckbourn's play, Absent Friends. She won a Theatre World "Newcomer" Award for her role in 1990-1991. She moved to Los Angeles in 1992 after performing in Christopher Hampton's The Philanthropist at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. She spent one-year auditioning before working for a cable station on Home Fires Burning. She had her big break in 1993 on TV when she appeared on Class of '96, on the fledgling Fox Network. The X Files sent her the script when she was 24 years old, as a result, of appearing on Class of 96.

She married The X-Files series assistant art director, Clyde Klotz in 1994 on New Years Day in a Buddhist ceremony in Hawaii. Clyde and Gillian have a daughter named Piper Maru born on September 1994. Clyde and Gillian divorced on February 1, 1997. Gillian married documentary filmmaker, Julian Ozanne on Lamu Island, off the coast of Kenya on December 29, 2004. They were separated on April 21, 2006 and divorced on July 24, 2007. Gillian and former boyfriend, Mark Griffiths, have two sons together. They had Oscar, who was born in November 2006 and Felix who was born in October 2008. Mark and Gillian ended their relationship in 2012.

Gillian says that her favorite movie is The Wrong Trousers (1993). She had many accents and uses them accordingly to the location she is at. She currently resides in London, United Kingdom. She was chosen by "People" magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.

She is an American actress that has acted in over 45 movies, directed and wrote TV series The X-Files - 1 episode - All Things (2000). She is known for her role as Special Agent Dana Scully on the The X-Files television series. Some movies she is known for are The X-Files (1998), The House of Mirth (2000), The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008). Gillian Anderson has had over 65 interviews, over 50 articles, over 12 pictorials and has been on over 130 magazine cover photos.
