His family is Roman Catholic and raised Taylor and his younger sister Makena Lautner in that religion as well-mannered kids. Lautner, who was born in c. 1848 in Austria. Edward M. Lautner's parents were Wenzel Lautner and Helen Quiezer. Taylor learned that his ancestry was also of the Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes during the filming of the Twilight films. His Native American ancestry is from his mother's side

Taylor began gaining a love for acting after his martial arts teacher persuaded him to audition for a Burger King commercial when he was seven years old. He did not get the gig but enjoyed auditioning so much that he told his parents he wanted to be an actor. His family agreed and began traveling numerous times from Michigan to California for auditions. It became overwhelming with all the travel that his family had to do, so they moved to Los Angeles when Taylor was ten/eleven years old so that it will be easier for him to audition for commercials, TV shows and films. The move to Los Angeles worked out for him because he began receiving a lot of small acting roles. Taylor said that when he was younger, he was bullied at school for being an actor. He stated, "I just had to tell myself I can't let this get to me. This is what I love to do. And I'm going to continue doing it." He gained many movie roles after Twilight (2008) including roles in Valentine's Day (2010) and Abduction (2011).
