(Christian) Beelzebub or Beelzebul is the highest devil and is a major demon in Hell. Beelzebub is a name derived from a Philistine God of Ekron, formerly worshipped in the Philistine city of Ekron. This high ranking demon is one of the Princes of Hell who presides over the "Order of the Fly".
Beelzebub is also known as Baal Zebub, Ba al Zebub. The title of Baal means "Lord". He is a Fallen Angel also known as a "Prince of Demons," and an Emperor of Hell. In Jewish/ Hebrew texts and The Dictionnaire Infernal describes this vile creature as the "Lord of the Flyers", "Lord of the Flies" or "Lord of the Feces Pile." Beelzebub is sometimes used as another name for the Devil like Satan and Lucifer.
This malevolent evil demon is a prominent fallen angel who causes the vilest acts. He is feared just as bad as demons like Lucifer and Leviathan. Beelzebub is insidious, mean, and is capable of flying.
Sebastien Michaelis associated Beelzebub with the deadly sin of pride, one of the seven deadly sins.
Beelzebub in The Bible
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow does not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.Matthew 12:24 The Bible
In Mark 3:22, the scribes accuse Jesus Christ of driving out demons by using the power of Beelzebul, Prince of Demons. The name Beelzebub also appears in the expanded version of The Bible in Matthew 12:24,27 and Luke 11:15, 18-19, and Matthew 10:25.
Testament of Solomon
In the Testament of Solomon, Beelzebul (not Beelzebub) appears as a prince of demons. Beelzebub explains how he was formerly a leading heavenly angel in heaven. He is associated with the star Hesperus (a Greek term for the Planet Venus). This makes him similar to Lucifer who also is deeply related to the Planet Venus and is a Fallen Angel of Heaven. Remember, Lucifer was once a very high ranking angel in heaven.
Beelzebul claims to cause destruction through tyrants, cause men to worship demons, cause priests to lust, cause jealousy and murders in cities, and bring about wars.
King Solomon wrote The Testament of Solomon and wrote about particular demons he enslaved and used to create the Temple of Solomon, Beelzebub was one of these demons used to make the Temple of Solomon.
Salem Witch Trials and Demon Possession
Beelzebub is mentioned in many demon possession cases. One of the most notable was in Salem, Massachusettes (The Salem Witch Trials).
During the Salem Witch Trials, Beelzebub"s name was mentioned many times. Rev. Cotton Mather wrote a pamphlet, titled "Of Beelzebub and his Plot." The pamphlet told the events of the Salem Witch Trials. This included tragedic events that occurred from February 1692 to May 1693.
