The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) Review

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) is a PG 1h 36 minutes American family fantasy adventure film That was shot in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and was an adaptation of Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi’s series, The Spiderwick Chronicles. The movie had an estimated budget of $90 million and grossed over $162.8 million worldwide. Director Mark Waters (Mean Girls (2004), Freaky Friday (2003), Just Like Heaven (2005)) did a phenomenal job executing this remarkable fantasy film that is something that viewers will want to see again and again.

The Spiderwick Chronicles takes place in the Spiderwick Estate in New England where Jared Grace and his family discover a field guide to mole trolls, battle goblins, faeries and other magical creatures. Jared (Freddie Highmore - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), August Rush (2007)) and his family moved to the Spiderwick Estate after they became fatherless. Jared, his twin brother Simon (Freddie Highmore) and sister Mallory discovered a world of fairies and goblins that are tied to the book titled, Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You. Jared likes the new secret world because it is a refuge for him from his unhappy life. It did not take long for Jared to discover that an evil creature is searching for the book and will do anything to get his hands on the book.

The movie was very lucid and approachable which makes it a great entertaining flick that was somewhat easy to understand. Fans of the books will enjoy this film immensely, but please do keep in mind that not all movies stay completely faithful to the books. The movie was not mean spirited, but I am not sure how parents will feel for their child to see siblings fighting goblins with tomato sauce bombs and salt. The movie overall was entertaining, enchantingly charming but uses way too much CGI which was not a bad thing because the movie was visually beautiful.
