Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Review
Director Brian Gibson had big shoes to fill directing Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) after Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg‘s Poltergeist (1982) hit. This sequel received one Oscar nomination for best visual effects and another nomination for best film.
Poltergeist II: The Other Side is about the Freeling family trying to move on with their lives after the destruction of their home in the first film and what they thought was the end of the poltergeist activity. Nope, it was not the end. Carol Ann Freeling is pursued from beyond the grave as the evil takes human form at times and continues to plague the family. We also get treated to a better backstory as to the origins of poltergeist; it was a man formerly who created such evil, he turned into something unredeemable for the good afterlife. That is why he is still pursuing Carol Ann to carry him into the light.
Poltergeist II: The Other Side is a very interesting movie despite the fact that the plot was rather subpar. My favorite movie of all time is the original Poltergeist (1982), and this movie is a respectable sequel. I like it because of the character Kane, for one, who gives the movie another ghostly dimension. Julian Beck was wonderful in the film as Kane. Also, the children remained good actors, especially the late Heather O’Rourke, who played Carol Anne. This is another strong performance by the young actress, and would have gone on to be a wonderful adult actress later in life had she lived. All in all, an enjoyable watch and commendable effort on everyone’s part and a better stab than most sequels.
