Synopsis:There are 666 portals that connect this world to the other side. These are concealed from all human beings. Somewhere in Japan exists the 444th portal.... The forest of resurrection.
Versus (2000) is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura on an estimated $400,000 budget. This is an action fantasy horror film. This Japenese film attempts to mesh together many different genres and for the most part, does a good job doing so but still falls short.
Versus features a sorcerer type archvillain in an attempt to reach the 444th portal out of 666 total portals that connect this world to the other side. One man attempts to thwart the evil from reaching the portal.
Not much backstory is given, and we are given a brief backstory then thrust straight into the high paced action of this movie. I enjoy some movies that do this, but this film needed a little more fleshing out to make it a solid movie. The action scenes and graphics were done well leaving me with an entertaining watch. Imagine mixing Highlander, Night of the Living Dead, Mortal Kombat, and Evil Dead together and throwing away any story in between. Watch this film as a great action film with horror elements that has a very shallow storyline and almost no character development.
