Along Came a Spider (2001) Review

Along Came a Spider (2001) is an American psychological thriller movie that is the sequel to the Kiss the Girls (1997). Screenplay writer Marc Moss adapted James Patterson‘s novel, Along Came a Spider (1993) but Marc eliminated most of the key plot elements that were in the book. The movie had an estimated budget of $60 million and grossed over $105.2 million worldwide. Director Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day (2002), Next (2007), The Edge (1997)) executed this movie exceptionally well but failed when making the fight scenes realistic. The movie contains one sexual reference/language, extreme violence, bad language, thrills, frightening scenes, twist, and suspense.

Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman - The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Se7en (1995), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Million Dollar Baby (2004)) is an author, detective, and forensic psychologist. Alex does not want to continue working in the force because of him losing control of a sting operation that caused his partner to die in Washington D.C. Alex experience is needed in the force again when the United States senator daughter is kidnapped. The senator daughter, Megan Rose (Mika Boorem - The Patriot (2000), Hearts in Atlantis (2001), Blue Crush (2002)) was kidnapped by her computer science teacher Gary Soneji from her exclusive private school. U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter - Parenthood (2010), Patch Adams (1998), Saw (2004)) was in charge of security and joins Alex to find Megan. Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott - The Crow (1994), Alien: Resurrection (1997), Dead Man (1995), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)) is one brave guy who calls Alex to tell him that he put Megan’s sneaker in Alex’s mailbox. Alex figures out that Gary is infatuated with Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. kidnapping in 1932 and wishes to become infamous as kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann. Gary’s second plan to kidnap a little boy was ruined when Alex intrudes. Gary later demands a $10 million ransom in diamonds, but there is a huge twist to the story that you will have to see. I suspected that Gary was not working alone but was surprised to see who his accomplices were.

Morgan Freeman gave a brilliant and flawless performance as usual. The movie had a few issues like too many plot holes, similar to other films and other things, but it all went well together and had enough to stand out from the rest to be a great watch.
