The Returned (2013) Review

I would recommend this horror suspense thriller movie. Director Manuel Carballo (Exorcismus, Seiken, El último justo) did an excellent job with this movie considering it is one of his first english movies to direct. Manuel did a great job portraying the conflicts facing our nation today. He added decent lighting, noise, music and ambiance at the proper time.

The Returned (2013) is set in a French town and is about dead people returning to town appearing the way they were when they died. Many people do not know that they were once zombies but were able to be "returned" from that state as long as they take their daily treatment and the zombie process did not set in too long. The "dead" have to take a medicine everyday to stay in that phase of transformation between human and zombie so that they do not turn into blood fiends. They are called the Returned.

Kate (Emily Hampshire - Secret Blackheart, That Burning Feeling, All the Wrong Reasons) and Alex (Kris Holden-Ried - Another You, Saul: The Journey to Damascus, Hunting Season) have one of the most beautiful relationships ever. They live in a high rise condo with outstanding furniture. Kate is a nurse who is working extremely hard to stock up on the medicine because Alex is one of them. The serum quantity has become so low that there is a fear of it being depleted. A new synthetic medicine has to be made because the original serum is made from the spinal fluid of full zombies. Since so many are being cured, there are not many full zombies to harvest the spinal fluid from.

The Returned becomes really interesting at this point because there are people (government and people who fear the Returned will revert back to zombies) who want to quarantine the Returned while others want them gone permanently. Kate decides to make a run for it with Alex and the medicine she has until everything calms down - what will happen next? If the Returned do not have the medicine every day then they will turn into zombies.

What will happen to Alex? A very well put together script and well done movie all around.

Not a scary zombie movie but does play on other fears that is more psychological. I enjoyed the story and was captivated by the stars performance.
