Blood Glacier Review
Synopsis:Scientists working in the Austrian Alps discover that a glacier is leaking a liquid that appears to be affecting local wildlife.
Director Marvin Kren (Rammbock, Schautag, Trio) had a good screenplay to work with but he did not execute the movie to its full potential. I will not see this movie again for various reasons. One good thing about this movie is that it made think about what I would do if I were secluded/cut off from the world and needed help desperately in order to save my life and others. The gory effects were great and the storyline was interesting but not something you would want to recommend to a friend to see. The movie contains horror, death, lots of gore and of course blood on glaciers. The movies need characters and monsters that the audience can connect to and engage with. I was not scared during this movie so some scares could have helped.
Blood Glacier (2013) is about a team consisting of three males, one female and a dog (Tinni) who head out to the Australian Alps to investigate climate change through a glacial reduction. They instead found a red liquid oozing out of the ice making it appear as though the ice was bleeding blood (not gory). The red liquid turns out to be a life threatening organic substance that can transform humans and animals into horrifying beastly mutations. Some of the hybrid beastly mutations are foxes, giant hairy beetles, goats, gigantic c**kroaches, werewolves and deadly birds. The group has serious life and death decisions to make about saving their lives until help arrives in twenty four hours. The animals are thirsty for blood and Janek (Gerhard Liebmann - The Dark Valley, All the Invisible Things, Heller als der Mond) knows it, but his dreams of being in the Scientific American is more important to him. He then persuades the team to stay and the persuades the team to leave when the situation got too intense with the animals.
Wondering if the team made it out alive and intact - well you will have to watch the film to find out. Here is a little more - the rescue team does arrive and it consists of a few folks. Two of those people are Janeks ex girlfriend from college, Tanga (Edita Malovcic - V8 - Die Rache des Nitros, The Bone Man, 4 Minutes) and Minister Bodicek (Brigitte Kren - Import/Export, Slugs, Crash Test Dummies).
This movie got a five because of the magnificent setting of the Austrian Alps. I purely enjoy the Alps scenery - I love the outdoors. I also don’t mind watching movies with subtitles so the score for this movie was not affected by that. I think if the director had a better budget to work with than the creatures/animals would not look so choppy and unmovable. I love the movie cover - awesome image.
Note - It is clear that Blood Glacier resembles Thing (1982) but does not live to their standards. Horror movie, Blood Glacier original title, was “Blutgletscher."
