The Town That Dreaded Sundown Review

65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called 'moonlight murders' begin again...

The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014) is an American thriller horror movie that is a meta-sequel to the 1976 movie of the same name. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story (2011), Argo (2012), Glee (2009)) executed this movie well but not to his full potential. The movie contains sexual content, nude scenes, violence, gore, suspense, graphic scenes, bad language and a killer on the loose. I like that this movie did not stray from the original version which payed homage to the old classic. The cast did a wonderful acting job on their scenes.

The movie started out showing us Corey Holland ( Spencer Treat Clark - Gladiator (2000), Unbreakable (2000), Mystic River (2003)) and Jami Lerner (Addison Timlin - Derailed (2005), That Awkward Moment (2014), Stand Up Guys (2012)) watching a drive-in movie, The Town That Dreaded Sundown on Halloween. Corey sees that Jami is not enjoying the movie and decides that they should leave. The couple went to a secluded area to make out and unexpectedly sees the Phantom whom later make them do things at gunpoint. The Phantom kills Corey and warns Jami to make everyone remember because what he did is for Mary. She walks back to the drive-in movie where she soon collapsed and waked the next morning in a hospital. After a few events and more murders, the Phantom calls Jami using Corey’s phone to remind her that he will keep killing until she makes everyone remember.

Jami tells Deputy Foster ( Joshua Leonard - The Blair Witch Project (1999), Men of Honor (2000), If I Stay (2014)) about her recent phone call from the Phantom which results in the residents of the town securing their windows/houses. Jami became more obsessed with her research about the Phantom. She receives an email from the Phantom after a few more events and becoming friends with Nick ( Travis Tope - Little Accidents (2014), Men, Women & Children (2014), Boardwalk Empire (2010)). Jami went to the police station and told them what she thinks of the Phantom, but her theory was dismissed. The Phantom was shot by an officer at the vigil that was held for all of his victims. Was the real Phantom shot/captured or was he a copycat? What will the Phantom do next? Watch the movie if you dare. Will the Phantom be caught and if he is caught then who will be the one to do it?

I will not watch this movie again, but I do recommend it for horror fans to watch. It was very entertaining, and the screenplay did justice to the original version. The acting, lighting, fear factors, scares, creepy killer, cinematography and sets were all good.
