Stonehearst Asylum Review
Synopsis:An Oxford graduate takes up a job in a mental asylum, only to discover that the "revolutionary" new treatments are inhumane and that there is more going on than meets the eye.
Stonehearst Asylum (2014) aka Eliza Graves (2014) is an American drama thriller movie that is based on Edgar Allan Poe‘s short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether". Director Brad Anderson (The Machinist (2004), The Call (2013), Transsiberian (2008), Session 9 (2001)) did an amazing job making me try to guess what will happen next although most was predictable. This movie is definitely not a horror movie as I thought it would be because of Edgar Allan Poe.
Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess - 21 (2008), Cloud Atlas (2012), Across the Universe (2007), One Day (2011)) is an Oxford graduate who went to the Stonehearst Lunatic Asylum in December 1899. He went to the Stonehearst Asylum to gain more experience being a psychiatrist who is specializing in asylum medicine. He met superintendent Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley - Schindler’s List (1993), Shutter Island (2010), Hugo (2011), Gandhi (1982)) who runs the hospital. Edwards soon learns that all the methods of treatment he has learned is different from what is being used in the asylum. Edward thought that the method of treatment is something that he did not sign up for. He then encountered another shocker that threw him off balance and leads him to do some serious thinking.
The actors all did a wonderful part with their roles. The script could have been better and more gore was needed. The movie was a bit slow as well and it needed more mysteries. It appears as though the movie borrowed certain concepts from Edgar Allan Poe’s short story and is a loose adaptation. One fail for me was that the ending in the short story was shown in the first thirty minutes of this movie. The movie stands out because it shows the patients as humans with disabilities that have a chance of being treated.
