Out of the Dark (2014) Review
Out of the Dark (2014) is supernatural thriller horror movie that is 92 minutes long and was filmed in Bogota, Colombia. Director Lluís Quílez did a phenomenal job with this movie that sends a sense of fear in parents. The movie was unique and stands out from all other horror movies I have seen recently. I will watch this movie again to see all the little hints I might have missed, cannot wait for the U.S release on February 27, 2015. Every horror fan should go out and see it if it is showing in your movie theaters because it will be a limited release.
Out of the Dark started out as a spine chilling horror movie that made me think twice about watching it in the night. We first see Dr. Andres Contreras, Jr. (Alejandro Furth - Dreamgirls (2006), Fun with Dick and Jane (2005), The Zero Hour (2010)) in 1992 leaving his office in Santa Clara, Colombia. He received a phone call while heading down the stairs and was instructed to burn some medical files which we later learn were files of missing children. Dr. Andre started hearing voices and could not burn all of the documents, so he threw some on the food lift because he was afraid of being caught. His end was tragic, and I did not get why it happened to him until the last 20 minutes of the movie.
The movie fast forwards 20 years later and we see Jordan (Stephen Rea - V for Vendetta (2005), Underworld: Awakening (2012), The Crying Game (1992), Citizen X (1995)) who is the owner of a paper mill in Santa Clara and made his daughter Sara the new manager of the paper mill. Sarah Harriman (Julia Stiles - The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), Silver Linings Playbook (2012)) and her husband Paul move from the UK with their daughter Hanna. The movie revolves around Sara and Paul (Scott Speedman - Underworld (2003), Underworld: Evolution (2006), Felicity (1998), The Strangers (2008)) going through drastic measures to find their baby girl. Hanna has mysteriously come down with a fever and bruises on her body that cannot be explained. Her parents started investigating Santa Clara’s history after they saw little children kidnapping their daughter Hanna in the night while she is lifeless with the fever. Watch the movie to see all the awesome details I left out and how Jordan puts his granddaughter in harms way without knowing about it. What he did in the ending was very noble and showed his love for his granddaughter, Hanna.
The ending was unpredictable and suspenseful. The music, cinematography, lighting effect, creepy tone, and sets were all amazing. The actors all did a fantastic job with their parts. The movie really touched me because as a mother I can relate to the parents in this movie. Will they find Hanna, watch the movie to see.
