Seventh Son Review

When Mother Malkin, the queen of evil witches, escapes the pit she was imprisoned in by professional monster hunter Spook decades ago and kills his apprentice, he recruits young Tom, the seventh son of the seventh son, to help him.

Seventh Son (2015) is a fantasy action movie that is filled with awesome adventures. Director Sergey Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007), Prisoner of the Mountains (1996), The Quickie (2001)) directorial skills shine (somewhat) in this movie although it could have been better. The movie contains sexual content, extreme violence, gore, witches, possession, jump scares, dragons, suspense, thrills and major killing.

Master Gregory ( Jeff Bridges - The Big Lebowski (1998), Iron Man (2008), True Grit (2010), TRON: Legacy (2010)) is a demon hunter and is the last of the Spooks. The Spooks protect the human race from Supernatural threats by defending them. Mother Malkin ( Julianne Moore - The Big Lebowski (1998), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011), The Kids Are All Right (2010)) is a malevolent witch that is imprisoned by Gregory for many years.
The Blood Moon is approaching and will give Mother Malkin enough power to break out of the prison by transforming herself into a dragon. Billy Bradley (Kit Harington - Pompeii (2014), Game of Thrones (2011), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), Silent Hill: Revelation 3D (2012)) is Gregory’s apprentice and leads him to a little possessed girl. Gregory soon realizes that the little girl is possessed by Mother Malkin and tried to exorcise her. Someone dies during this event while Mother Malkin escapes.

Gregory visits Tom Ward (Ben Barnes - The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), Stardust (2007), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010), Dorian Gray (2009)) home and offers his parents a lot of money if they let him take Tom as his apprentice. Tom is the seventh son of a seventh son, and his mother gave him her necklace that has a strange stone. Mother Malkin is still on the loose and guesses who will help in the effort to capture her. The movie is very interesting as Tom and Mother Malkin knows the same little girl Alice (Alicia Vikander - A Royal Affair (2012), Ex Machina (2015), Seventh Son (2014), Anna Karenina (2012)) - Whose side is Alice on???

Seventh Son was worth the wait, but I felt they should have fixed all of the plot holes. The actors all did a wonderful job with their parts. The sets were astonishing and were definitely one of the reasons why I will watch this movie again. The storyline was okay, and so was the cinematography and lighting effects. The CGI was not anything too extravagant as I thought it would be which took a point away from this movie. Everyone who loves a good fantasy thriller movie should see Seventh Son.
