Ava's Possessions (2015) Review

Ava’s Possessions (2015) is an American that is 89 minutes long is filled with glorious moments. Director and writer Jordan Galland (21 (2008), Tiny Furniture (2010), Alter Egos (2012), Life of Crime (2013)) did a marvelous job executing this movie. He does not have much experience in the directing department, but he amazed me in every way in this movie. I would love to see more movies from Jordan. I had second thoughts about seeing this demon possession movie. I thought they put all the good parts in the trailer, that the movie will be just like any other possession movie - boring - I put my foot in my mouth as I was so wrong. The movie contains horror, thrills, possession, suspense, humor, sitting on the edge of your seat moments and some pretty good scenes that were not in the trailer.

Ava’s Possessions is about the possession/exorcism of a young girl and how it affected her during and after possession. Ava (Louisa Krause - Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), Young Adult (2011), King Kelly (2012), Bluebird (2013)) was demon possessed for 28 days by an evil demon. Her family and priest surrounded her as she was undergoing an exorcism. She has ridden herself of the demon and is now trying to fix her life by putting the pieces back together. She has major work to do as she was possessed by the demon for 28 days and caused many pains. Some troubles she has caused included slashing throats, vandalizing/damaging properties and… - watch the movie to see. The movie takes place in a world that is aware of possession, and anyone can find healing potions, spells and incantations from the corner store. In this movie, it was bought from a shopkeeper (Carol Kane).

Ava also attends a Spiritual Possession Anonymous group to help her cope with her situation. The court ordered her to attend the group because she cannot be charged for a crime that she clearly did when possessed. Part of the healing with the groups’ help is to face her victims and not repeat what she did to them while possessed. The demon that possessed Ava is named, Naphula the Anointed and Naphula wants to repossess Ava. Will he repossess her and what will he do to get what he wants. Watch the movie to see.

One major issue I had with the film although I praised it was that it was not clear as to what happened to Ava’s boyfriend, Ben. He was there to protect her and help her, but sometimes he was nowhere to be seen again and had left Ava’s life. I am not sure if I missed something, but I would love to know what happened to him. The actors, sets, cinematography, lighting effects, sound, and everything about the movie was splendid.
