Synopsis:Over-imaginative 12 year-old Sam heads off to the woods to summer scout camp with his pack convinced he will encounter a monster...and he does.
Cub (2014), Welp (2014), is a Belgian adventure horror movie that was originally titled Welp. Some of Cub fund was raised in an IndieGoGo campaign. Director and co-writer Jonas Govaerts did an awesome job directing his first full-length movie. I gave the movie a six because it is a low budget film with inexperienced actors, and it excelled more than experienced directors with an endless budget. It did not receive a higher score than six because the movie is a cliche to other movies in so many ways, but the director took a chance and excelled to a point. This movie might be frightening for younger viewers with a dog being used as a pinata, and the kills are graphic. The camera shots were awesomely done, and I would love to see more full-length movies from this upcoming director.
Sam (Maurice Luijten) is a twelve-year-old cub scout that went on a Cub Scout with other Cub members. Pack leader Peter (Stef Aerts) and other Cub members usually bully Sam. Chris (Titus De Voodgt - Steve + Sky (2004), Ben X (2007), Any Way the Wind Blows (2003), Nowhere Man (2008)) is also a pack leader and tries to stop everyone from bullying Sam. The bullying of Sam led the team to astray from each other while on their annual survival camp through the mountains. Camp leaders tried to ease the tension of the scouts by telling them a story about a werewolf (Kai) that is supposedly living in the very same forest (Southern Belgian backwoods) that they are in. Not too long after, Sam saw a secret hideout place and a mysterious figure, a boy (Gill Eeckelaert) whom he assumes is Kai. His fellow scouts laughed at him when he told them about Kai and his encounter. Chris and the other scouts soon wished they had listened to Sam and not laughed at him. The boy Sam spoke about turns out to be the son of a bloodthirsty poacher, Stroper (Jan Hammenecker - The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), The Family (2013), Mr. Nobody (2009), Tango libre (2012)) who has planted deadly booby traps throughout the forest. I laughed as Chris became frantic because he should have listened to little Sam and not laughed at him.
Who will survive this serial killer and who will DIE????
