Da Sweet Blood of Jesus Review

Dr. Hess Green becomes cursed by a mysterious ancient African artifact and is overwhelmed with a newfound thirst for blood...

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2015) is an American comedy romance thriller horror movie that is 123 minutes long. The movie was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA and New York City, New York, USA. Director and writer Spike Lee (Inside Man (2006), Malcolm X (1992), 25th Hour (2002), Do the Right Thing (1989)) funded his moved through Kickstarter for the first time. I feel terrible giving this movie a four but it was terrible and a waste of money that was donated. Those who donated money are probably very upset that Spike Lee did not set his best foot forward when directing this movie. Spike Lee said his movie is about: "Human beings who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy and bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of ‘Blacula’)." Another person said the movie is "...a remake — at times scene for scene and shot for shot — of “Ganja and Hess,” playwright and filmmaker Bill Gunn’s landmark 1973 indie that used vampirism as an ingenious metaphor for black assimilation, white cultural imperialism and the hypocrisies of organized religion."

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is about an African tribe that drinks blood as though it was alcohol or a form of drugs. Dr. Hess Greene (Stephen Tyler Williams - Children of God (2010), Float (2007), Phil Spector (2013)) is a world renowned anthropologist that discovers a cursed dagger. He discovers the dagger while working on artifacts from the Ashanti Empire. Dr. Hess took the dagger with him to have dinner with his research assistant, Dr. Lafayette Hightower (Elvis Nolasco - Oldboy (2013), Clockers (1995), Che: Part One (2008), I Like It Like That (1994)) who is suicidal. Dr. Lafayette attacked Dr. Hess and stabbed him to death or so it seems at the time with the cursed dagger. Dr. Lafayette believes that he killed Dr. Hess and committed suicide. Dr. Hess survived the stabbing and is now thirsty for blood. Dr. Lafayette ex-wife went to Dr. Hess looking for her ex-husband and discovers his body in Dr. Hess basement freezer. She falls in love with Dr. Hess although her ex-husband body is in a freezer, and Dr. Hess falls in love with her. Dr. Hess gave her eternal life as he promised her after their wedding ceremony. I am still puzzled as to what type of creature is Dr. Hess and his new wife, they are not  vampires.

The movie was way too slow for my preference, and it became very daunting. The actors all did a phenomenal job with their roles, but the storyline did not do their performance justice. The cinematography was purely breathtaking, gorgeously done with The Hamptons beachfront. The movie had too much background music playing, and it became a distraction rather than an enjoyment.
