Poltergeist (2015) Review
Poltergeist (2015) is an American 3D thriller horror movie that is a remake of Poltergeist (1982). Poltergeist (1982) was produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper. Poltergeist (2015) was 93 minutes long and was filmed in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Pinewood Toronto Studios, Port Lands, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Director Gil Kenan (Monster House (2006), City of Ember (2008)) did not excel at directing his third movie. His inexperience with the filming industry shows but I do have to give him credit for pulling off a great job. The movie was not bad, and it was not good - overall it was better than what I have seen recently from experienced directors. The movie was written by David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots (2005), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), Rabbit Hole (2010), Rise of the Guardians (2012)) and produced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead (1981), Xena: Warrior Princess (1995), Evil Dead (2013)). The movie contains minor sexual reference that kids may not understand, suspense, thrills, scares, sitting on the edge of your seat moments and emotions.
The movie revolves around the Bowen family and the faith they met with after purchasing a new home. Eric (Sam Rockwell - Moon (2009), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Iron Man 2 (2010)) and his wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt - Cinderella Man (2005), The Watch (2012)) purchase a new home after Eric got laid off. The couple and their three kids began hearing strange noises in the wall after moving into their new home. I would definitely not stay in a house if the lights and electronics turn on and off by themselves in the middle of the night that happened in the movie. Their youngest daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements - Jingle All the Way 2 (2014), A Family Thanksgiving (2010), Twist of Faith (2013)) creeps everyone out by saying "They’re here" after some bizarre events. As things were not strange enough, the couple was told by their neighbors their home was built on an old cemetery and the bodies and headstones were moved to another area.
Watch the movie to see what happens to Madison after she follows her moving bear into the mysteriously opened closet. I did like that this movie is a little faster than the older version, and it did not take longs for the jump scares to make their debut. This movie follows most of the same structure of the original film - had very minor changes. One change is that more attention was paid to their son Griffin (Kyle Catlett - The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013), The Following (2013), The Fort (2011)). I will give you one more - Carrigan Burke (Jared Harris - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), The Boxtrolls (2014), Lincoln (2012), Natural Born Killers (1994)) replaced Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein - Poltergeist (1982), Anguish (1987), Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)) from the original film. I loved to see Zelda Rubinstein in movies and missed her in this movie. Carrigan is a host of a reality show called “Haunted House Cleaners.” I did not enjoy seeing him acting the part of a median because his script made him appear as a smart mouthed guy that I would not like in my house.
The CGI that shows mostly towards the ending of the movie took away the charm the movie had in 1982. Overall the movie was an okay watch but I would not see it again - I do however watch the original at least twice a year. I would have given this move a lower score, but the new director did try to execute this movie to the best of his abilities. I think this movie would have been a hit if it had another title, and new horror movie fans saw it instead of fans like me who has Poltergeist (1982) stuck in our head.
