The Diabolical (2015) Review

The Diabolical (2015) is an American science fiction horror that I was skeptical about was intrigued by the cover art/image. I absolutely love the cover image. It is unique and makes you think about the movie and how wonderful it will be. The movie was more than I expected it to be, and the cover photo did the movie justice. Director and co-writer Alistair Legrand did a phenomenal job executing his first movie. Alistair displays great talent, and I cannot wait to see more movies from him. 2015 is the year of new directors that excels more than established directors.

The Diabolical did not waste any time introducing us to the characters and throwing horror at us - it was great. Madison (Ali Larter - Final Destination (2000), Final Destination 2 (2003), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)) is a single mother. Madison prays that nothing bad happens tonight as they did on the previous nights because it is just too much to deal with. A mysterious figure appears every night out of nowhere and makes its way towards Madison and then disappears into thin air. Madison is not sure if the figure wants to hurt her or needs her help but one thing she is sure of is that she is terrified of it. The absurd figure did not excite me for very long because I was bored of it during the second part of the movie. Madison’s boyfriend Nikolai (Arjun Gupta - Bridge and Tunnel (2014), Stand Up Guys (2012), Nurse Jackie (2009), Love, Lies and Seeta (2012)) is a scientist. Nikolai is trying to help his love Madison figure out what is going on in her home because paranormal experts are too scared to tackle the matter.

The movie kept me on my toes as bits and pieces of the mystery ghost is revealed and why it is haunting the family. There were a lot of questions left unanswered in this movie. I felt as though there were not enough time to elaborate on every subject matter that the movie touched on which is sad. Madison desperately tries to save her family as the apparitions haunt and terrorize them. She cannot leave the house with her family and must do whatever it takes to get rid of the evil entities. The cinematographer, sound, and the make-up department did a fantastic job. Ali Larter did not give a convincing performance as a lover but nailed it as a single mother protecting her kids. The Diabolical was a very enjoyable watch with some great scares although it had a few plot holes. All horror fans should watch this movie at least once.
