From the Dark Review
Synopsis:A couple on a trip through the Irish countryside find themselves hunted by a creature who only attacks at night.
From the Dark (2014) is an Irish-English low budget horror movie that was filmed in County Laois, Ireland and County Offaly, Ireland. The outdoor sceneries were spectacular and magnificent in every way possible. Director Conor McMahon (Stitches (2012), Dead Meat (2004), The Braineater (2001)) did not excel at executing this movie. The movie had the potential of being something worth seeing more than twice, but it fell short in many areas.
The atmosphere and creepy monster throughout the film were consistent although there was not much dialog. One of the things that keep coming to my mind while viewing this movie was why in the world did they not look for weapons? They are on a farm, but even farms have all sort of sharp pointy objects/items that you can transform into a beautiful weapon. I had so many questions as to why did the characters not think of doing this or that. They could have lit the rags and papers they have in the house with the lighter they have in the house. Ok, think about this, they are creatures that are scared of lights, and you have items in your house that can be lit to keep the creatures away. So, why would it take you more than half way through the movie to make a torch to keep the creature away? It was definitely frustrating to watch this film - yes it was like most other movies where you ask yourself why things are not done. The crazy woman does not even think of setting the house on fire to keep the creatures away while she was in her vehicle - it would have created a massive fire that will light a vast area. The movie had potential, but it lacked good actors and a more experienced director.
From the Dark revolves around a couple that was trapped in a house after their car got stuck in the mud, and they had to take refuge in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. The movie only consists of about three characters and a creature that is not seen much which makes it all scarier. I gave this movie a five although it fell short in many areas because the scare factors and thrills were there. It was creepy at times, and the thrill was when I was screaming at the characters for not doing what they are supposed too. I would not recommend this movie to my fellow horror fans. The movie is best viewed and will be enjoyed by open-minded viewers who will go with the flow and not question the characters choices. From the Dark is currently available to stream via Netflix.
