The Curse of Downers Grove (2015) Review
The Curse of Downers Grove (2015) is an American mystery, drama, thriller horror movie that is based on the novel, Downers Grove (1999) by Michael Hornburg. Director and co-writer Derick Martini (Lymelife (2008), Smiling Fish & Goat on Fire (1999), Hick (2011)) did a horrible job directing this movie in California, USA. The movie is no different than the last ten thriller movies about a cursed town with teenagers that makes stupid choices about life and ends up being dead. Volunteer your time helping a needy neighbor instead of watching this chaotic movie that is filled with plot holes. Here is another movie that wastes precious money that could have been donated to a charity to feed hungry, homeless people or to a charity that will help save many people’s life from illnesses.
The Curse of Downers Grove takes place in suburb Downers Grove, Illinois in a high school that is cursed and takes the life of a senior every year. The movie revolves around the life of seniors Chrissie Swanson (Bella Heathcote - Dark Shadows (2012), In Time (2011), The Rewrite (2014), Not Fade Away (2012)) and Tracy. Chrissie is the skeptical one and does not believe anything about the curse whereas Tracy (Penelope Mitchell - Zipper (2015), The Vampire Diaries (2009), Hemlock Grove (2013), 6 Plots (2012)) believes/thinks that she is the next victim. A lot of people think that the seniors die because of their crazy behavior, and some believe it is because of the town’s Native American past. Skip forward, football star (Kevin Zegers) makes Bella (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013), Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Colony (2013), Wrong Turn (2003)) believe that she is the next victim of the senior death. There is so much more to the movie, but I do not want to spoil it for horror fans that think this dreadful movie is worth seeing.
The film tries to convey that there is a curse however you see the students dying from poor choices such is being very intoxicated and falling off of a water tower to meet your death. The only curse I see is that stubborn kids making wrong decisions in life where they either drink too much alcohol to the point where they do crazy deadly acts, do not use their brains and make bad judgement calls. There were so many goofs especially in the end where one person is punching someone, and you see that the fist does not touch the other person but yet the other person acts as though he/she has been hit. The sound effects were horrible and did not flow well with the movie. The film failed miserably and was in no doubt mediocre. Do yourselves a favor and stay clear of this movie when it is released on DVD/Blu-Ray on September 1, 2015.
