VANish (2015) Review

VANish (2015) is an American action crime horror movie that was filmed in several location in California, USA. Newbie director, producer, actor and writer Bryan Bockbrader did a fantastic job debuting his first movie to direct. VANish is no ordinary crime film although it is pretty laid back. The climax was mind blowing because I did not see it coming. Danny Trejo did not have a significant role in this movie, and his appearance helped the film to be recognized. I applaud all of the new actors for doing a fabulous job with their roles. The newbies did better than a few well-trained actors I have seen recently in movies, what a shame that the actors with vast experience cannot act. VANish reminds me of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN except for the fact that it does not have vampires. VANish is a film that I will show to my guests and family because it was amusing, entertaining, suspenseful and a great experience.

VANish began by showing us a man and female being romantic with each other and then switches to two numbskulls, Jack and Max getting into mischief. Jack (Austin Abke) and Max (Bryan Bockbrader) are half-brothers, and they do not work for anyone. The duo decided to kidnap Mexican drug dealer Carlos (Danny Trejo - Machete (2010), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Heat (1995), Machete Kills (2013)) daughter Emma. There are many turns in this movie so you will just have to pay attention. Carlos is the one that had kidnapped Max and Jack at the beginning of the film. Here is the big what moment, Carlos’ wife and Jack’s father were the couples who were intimate in the opening scene! Max thinks that he and Jack are up to their standard misdeeds, but Max does not know that Jack is out for revenge and not ransom, all because Carlos killed Jack’s father.

Max and Jack soon discovered that Emma (Maiara Walsh - The Starving Games (2013), Cory in the House (2007), Zombieland (2013), Mean Girls 2 (2011)) is not their ordinary girl because she is tough and not scared of them. The duo decides that they need help and picks up their buddy Shane (Adam Guthrie) who is in it for the money so that he can buy drugs. Emma did a marvelous job convincing the three guys that she killed her family because of a pony set. She knows that they are incapable of killing her, but she did not know that the van she is in will soon become a bloodbath. The movie had its funny/comedy moments that will make you laugh, especially when they get pulled over by an officer. I was in disbelief when Emma decides to escape with Shane, out of everyone, he killed someone with a machete and did I forget to mention that he is a drug addict that is not stable in the mind. I was actually asking, Emma out loud, what are you thinking, what are you doing?
