Baskin Review

A squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building.

Baskin (2015) is a Turkish American fantasy horror film that is based on director and co-writer Can Evrenol (Baskin (2013), Sandik (2007), To My Mother and Father (2010)) short of the same name in 2013. Baskin was an average view that was not good or bad and that had a few surprising elements that wowed me although the storyline was thin. Gorehounds will enjoy this movie because it contains blood spillage, gruesome images, slit throat with an ancient key in it and monsters/creatures. The dialogue was one of a kind that I enjoyed immensely and with that said this movie is a hit or miss. Cinematographer Alp Korfali did a wonderful job creating the moody atmosphere that can be seen in Baskin. The makeup department outdid themselves as the makeup jobs were exceptionally good. The actors did an amazing job with all of their roles.

Baskin starts with a prologue where Arda (Gorkem Kasal) who is a young rookie cop that is seen as a child in a flashback. We see Arda having his first recurring dream that haunts him still today into adulthood. Arda was having a hard time sleeping and wanders around the hallway not expecting an unexpected bloody hand reaching out to him. Arda and a few other police officers who works the night-shift talk sheepishly about sexual things and soccer. One of those officers is Chief Remzi (Ergun Kuyucu - Taken 2 (2012), Zerre (2012), Black Dogs Barking (2009), Cute & Dangerous (2015)) who became Arda’s guardian after his parents died. Yavuz (Muharrem Bayrak - The Long Way Home (2013), The Breath (2009), Cilek (2014)) was also one of the officers there who is known to be hot-headed/quick tempered and tries to fight with the waiter. Another officer became sick while eating his dinner but the other officers did not take any concern to it as they thought it is normal.

They did not take long to receive a call about a possible crime scene that is located in the middle of nowhere. The officers did not make it to the crime scene as they skid off the road while swerving away from a naked man running across the road. Their van landed up in a creek that contains a massive amount of frogs and creepy gypsies that left scratches on their van. To make matters worse, there is no phone service or radio control service, so there is no help coming their way anytime soon, stranded they are. The team decide to walk and soon after found another cop car but no officers, they are starting to get shaky, at least, I would.
