Synopsis:Criminals and a beautiful but cunning hitchhiker battle a supernatural force known as the Reaper.
Reaper (2014) is an American sci-fi horror crime film that contains thrills, salvation, criminal, mafia, cult leader, zealot, supernatural power, blood, haunted hotel, slasher, psychopath, and haunting.
Director Wen-Han Shih (Doomed Love (2011), Westgate Tango (2012), Battle for Skyark (2016)) did an average job executing this film. The movie also contains bad language, violence, greed, redemption, preacher, seduction, anti-hero, punishment, sin, repentance, femme fatale, money, deception, monster, trucker, drug dealer, hitchhiker, and murder.
Natalie (Shayla Beesley - Sex and the USA (2008), Perkins’ 14 (2009), Trophy (2008)) is a hitchhiker that is cute and cunning. It did not take long to see her find her way to deadly trouble as she enters a town where a dark supernatural killer/Reaper is lurking around looking for his next victim who he believes to be a sinner. She has no other choice but to team up with a group of drifters and criminals if she wants to survive. The Reaper/supernatural killer (Mike Michaels - Battle for Skyark (2016)) is a cult leader that escaped the electric chair. Back to the beginning of the movie - Natalie was hitching a ride when an alcoholic salesman, Bill (Jake Busey - Starship Troopers (1997), Enemy of the State (1998), Identity (2003), The Frighteners (1996)) picks her up. His car breaks down soon after, and they ended up renting a motel room for the night as newlyweds. Skip forward - Natalie spikes Bill’s drink, he falls asleep, and she robs him by taking his wallet and car. Natalie’s mom needs money for a surgery that is pending, and Natalie assures her mother that everything will be ok, and she will receive the money in time.
Natalie Saw Brad (James Jurdi - Price (2007), Nocturnal Errands (2012), Pocket Listing (2015)) at a diner that she stopped to eat at. She sets her eyes on him after he gave the waitress a huge tip and soon after sabotages his car leading her to eventually almost running him over. She makes friends with him seconds later only to drive off with his money and gun. She is one slick chick that soon realizes that she messed with the wrong guy; he is a drug mule. Jack (Danny Trejo - Machete (2010), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Machete Kills (2013), Heat (1995)) is the drug dealer and later decides to help Natalie along with Brad. The adventure that began from this point on was an entertaining, impressive ride that I might watch again.
Reaper was an enjoyable edgy, entertaining horror thrill ride that reminds me a little of The Shining (1980) and appears as though it was paying homage. The thin and thick slasher scenes that are sometimes not bloody enough is one of the reasons I gave this movie a five. The actors did a phenomenal job with their roles and yes, Danny Trejo added the extra macho feel the film needed. The special effects were nicely done as well as the music and makeup.
