Blood: The Last Vampire Review

In Japan, the vampire-hunter Saya, who is a powerful original, is sent by her liaison with the government...

Blood: The Last Vampire (2000) is a Japanese anime action horror film that is 48 minutes and is considered to be a cult anime film. This anime movie hit it big with three Japanese light novel adaptations that have been released for the series and a video game. The video game was developed by Production I.G., Sugar and Rockets (PS2), and Sony Computer Entertainment (PSP). It was published by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in December 2000 and released for the PSP in January 2006. The novels are Blood: The Last Vampire: Night of the Beasts by author Mamoru Oshii - November 2000; and both Blood: The Last Vampire novels by author Junichi Fujisaku on January 2001 and December 2005. There was also a fifty-episode anime series titled Blood+ (2005-2006 anime TV series) that spawned from this film and a second anime series titled Blood-C (2011 anime TV series). Director Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Black Magic M-66 (1987), Golden Boy (1995)) did a phenomenal job with this short anime that gained recognition in so many areas and became a cult classic.

Blood: The Last Vampire takes place in 1966 where Saya (voice - Yuki Kudo) is the main protagonist who hunts chiropterans which are bat-like creatures. We first see her assassinating a man on a subway train, and it was soon discovered by Louis (voice - Stuart Robinson) that the man was most likely not a chiropteran. Louis and David (voice - Joe Romersa) are her American contacts that give her missions to complete. Her next mission was at the American Yokota Air Base where one chiropteran had infiltrated the air base. Saya has to stop the bat-like creature before it feeds again on an innocent victim and becomes untraceable.

Saya dresses like a schoolgirl so that she can gain entrance to the base which is located next to the school. She met a nurse, Makiho Amano (voice - Saemi Nakamura) on the night of the school’s Halloween party. The movie instantly got intense as Saya abruptly kills two of her classmates that went to the nurse’s office, leaving the nurse in a shocking state of mind. The actions do not stop as a third chiropteran is on their tails and eventually traps Saya and the nurse. That is all I am going to say, no more spoilers from me. What will happen, will Saya or the third chiropteran win? Are there more chiropterans in the film?

The anime was excellent in almost every way, and I wished it was a bit longer. I was not too crazy over the characters appearance but love the dialogue and storyline.

A little information about Saya:

She uses a katana to kill the chiropterans and is considered to be last remaining vampire who has no weakness to sunlight. It was not said in the movie if she has a lust for blood like other vampires do. She is cunning, resourceful and uses superhuman senses and strength to trace and kill her enemy.

A few things the anime contains are Vampire, Halloween, demon, a female protagonist, blood, dark heroine, violence, sword, suicide, blood splatter, gore, computer animation, murder, undercover agent, sword fight, vampire slayer, and decapitation.
